This is a problem with facebook servers. It is not the first time this happens to some facebook users.
It works for your friends because there accounts aren't on the same machine as your. Large websites like facebook have multiple servers machines not just one. They are currently working on the machine that contains your data so it is unavailable, like the message says it should be back in few hours when they finish with the work.

Cant log in to facebook, get the message, site under maintence but been like this over 24 hours

Hi,

Site Maintenance message usually means that Facebook is making an improvement to the database and after the maintenance is over, you will be able to login to your account without any problem.

Usually, this maintenance process takes just a few hours and affects only few users at a time.
If the "maintenance error" lasts longer than 24 hours and you are still unable to login to your account, kindly report the issue to Facebook Support by clicking this link.

Hope this solves your problem. Thanks for using FixYa.

Just tested it and logged in, everything seems to be good. Try clearing out your temporary files and history on your computer. Assuming you are using Internet Explorer to surf the web, follow the directions below:

1. Goto "Tools"
2. Goto "Internet Options"
3. Under "Browsing History" , select "Delete"
4. In the next box select "Delete All"
5. Close Internet Explorer and try to log into Facebook again.

Facebook has finally posted something about everyone not being able to log it. It only took them 5-6 days!! I have not been able to log in since 10/4/09) But this is what was on my page when I tried to log in this morning (10/9/09). It's about time that they let us know something. So, who know how much longer we will have to wait!

"Sorry, due to site maintenance, your account is unavailable at this time. We are currently experiencing an extended site maintenance issue that is preventing some users from accessing their accounts or Pages they may administer. Rest assured that your account has not been deleted or compromised. Your original account will be restored as soon as possible so there is no need to create a new one. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience you've encountered while attempting to log in to Facebook during this time.

Networking sites like all websites have downtime, to update, upgrade various portions of their site, usually these upgrades take only a few hours to self fix... I suggest you wait the couple of hours and try again :)
