OK, your's is an "OTR" (over the range) model. Yes, you're right there is a thermostat located just behind the MW control panel on the floor (bottom panel). It's designed to sense an "over temp" condition (like a fire) on the range top and turn on the exhaust fan.

Sounds like your t'stat (for the fan) has failed.

I'll stick by my guns, though... I highly recommend calling an appliance repair company to take care of this for you. It's a dangerous job and better to let a trained tech get in there to fix it. (At any given time, there could be 2500 Volts present that would lay you out if you don't know how to discharge it safely, OK?)

Your a show off, JK. So your microwave gets bored when not doing its' job and hums. The only talent my microwave has is heating stuff up. Maybe one day it'll learn to... I don't know... whistling would be cool!

p.s. I'm only kidding. You're vague description does, however, lead me to believe that one of your interlock switches is c r a p p e d out. Here's the thing, though... working on a microwave is DANGEROUS could really kill you! (I'm NOT kidding... appliance parts retailers aren't even supposed to sell microwave parts to a "non-tech") I wouldn't recommend getting into this, especially if it's a counter top model. It'd be cheaper to replace it that repair it.

Over the range microwaves are difficult to install if you don't know what you are doing. It involves taking the range out and unscrewing two bolts on the bottom of the cabinet the MW is fastened to. Aside from the fact that it is in a tough spot, the back has a lip that is hooked onto a plate screwed onto the wall.

Some of these MWs are really heavy, and if you don't know what to expect when you release the bolts you could get yourself seriously hurt, even aside from the electrical aspects. I too recommend that you call a service tech out to test the microwave out.

It's worth paying a pro to do something that he does all the time rather than take a chance. And I would do it now, not later.

The trash compactor won't open and it locked shut. When the dial is on the "ON" position, the unit just hums.

Check the mechanism for the door failure as the link could be caught up . open the top cover and find this out.
The hum could be the failure of the capacitor which could be short.
The microwave will not work then, so replace and check this out.

Humming ge sapcesaver microwave

During operation, most of the built-in models have a panel that tilts out while the exhaust fan is on. When cooking is done, the exhaust fan shuts off and the panel retracts to its normal position. With the fan & microwave motor off, the hum is easier to hear. Look closely at the top panel the next time you hear the hum, and you'll probably see that it's retracting.
