There can be many reasons why you don't see a thing. Be sure you put the camera in record mode (not display mode) make sure the display setting is bright enough to see what is on the screen.
Make sure your camera is not connected to a PC, with a USB cable.
And don't try to use the camera while charging, because the display won't show anything at all.
I hope something over here you recognise?
If not, try the manual, Page 155 trouble shooting.

SOURCE: flash doesn't work on nikon coolpix l12

I actually just fooled around with mine because it was doing the same thing. It will only flash in the scene mode, but not the normal quickshot mode. i noticed under the camera symbol on the screen said BSS and i went into the menu and clicked on BSS and turned it off b/c it was on and that worked finally.maybe u can try it, if its the same situation.

Isn't there a button on the camera with a picture of a clock? Push that to reach the proper setting menu.

Make sure to shut the battery door! I had the same problem. The only way to access the a/v out is to open the battery door but you must shut the battery door or it won't charge

Have a Nikon coolpix 4100 and cannot figure out from the manual how to use the self-timer feature.????

Hi.
On the selector dial press the left arrow next to the clock icon. This brings up the timer selector. Press the down arrow to select on and then select. This sets the timer. Now position your camera and press the shutter button. There is a 10 second delay between pressing the shutter button and the picture being taken. If you want to take another picture with the timer, you have to reset it.

Problem with nikon coolpix 8700

Same problem that would not allow me to take a picture without pressing the LOCK button on my Nikon 8700. Here is how I believe I fixed the problem:

Turn the camera ON.

Press MENU button on your camera to bring up the menu.

Scroll down to SET-UP, open the SET-UP menu by scrolling right.

In the SET-UP menu, scroll all the way down to FUNC (Controls) on page 2/3 , open the FUNC (Controls) menu by scrolling right.

You are now presented with 2 options:FUNC and AE-L, AF-L)

Select the FUNC option by right scrolling.

Choose the 2nd option: i.e the mountain, flower and timer icon (distance, macro and self-timer icon) by right scrolling.

Press the MENU button to get out of the menu.

Attempt to take a picture without pressing LOCK.

Should work! Anyways, it worked for me.

Cheers.
