SOURCE: Sony BRAVIA KDL-40W4000
I've been looking into this myself as I've also recently purchased the KDL-40W4000. I was watching a murky old film and was getting a bit of sludgy ghosting but found that by reducing the contrast to 25, setting the backlight on low, colour on neutral and the brightness about 40-60 (and taking ALL advanced noise functions off), this reduced the ghosting considerably.
BUT, this is quite a cool and dark image. If you watch standard TV and films mainly, a variation of the Cinema setting is probably the best overall setting i.e.
colour temp: Warm 2 (although Warm 1 is less yellow and still fine)
noise reduction: off
mpeg nr: off
contrast enhancer: off
colour space: standard

To answer you question;
Your tv is able to process signals that it receives from dvd`s,cable box, computers etc. at up to 1080p.
But it does that automatically when it detects/receives that signal.
The only thing that you can change is the format that it will display it, like 16:9 , 4:3, panorama, zoom etc.
hope this help

That symptom may cause by the main board or t-con board, I suggest you do software up grade first.

hello, try tightening your antenna connection this happens when your signal input cable is fualty or loose check that first. then try all other connection that come from your cable, sat reciever or antenna hook up. if your using a digital reception device or digital antenna check those connections to. and be aware that digital reception has interuptions and they depend on the distance between you and the digital signal broadcast station, sometimes storms and atmospheric conditions may cuase a brief lapse in the signal.(stutter) what are you using for a reception? satelite, cable or a digital antenna? hope this helps

SOURCE: I have a Sony KDL-40s5100,
I think that there is a problem with your INPUT/OUTPUT BOARD also know as the ANALOG BOARD
try the other inputs to see what happens
when your using the cable input try to open the menu it should open if it is just the analog board
but if not then you might have a digital problem
