Although pipecutters are generally seen as giving a much cleaner and better cut than hacksaws, they are a bit limited in what they are able to cut through. Hacksaws however can cut through all sizes of plastic and metal.

How do you take the muffler off

On most cars, if it is the original muffler, it will be welded into the exhaust system. You would need to cut the muffler out of the system with a pipe cutter, hacksaw, or torch to remove it. Aftermarket mufflers are installed with clamps. Those must be removed in order to remove the muffler. Even then, the clamps will crimp the pipes together and you often have the chisel the muffler collars off the exhaust pipe to remove.

How to Use a Pipe Cutter?

Pipe cutters are really useful tools that can be used in the house to cut pipes that are made from metal or plastic. You could always try using a saw of some kind but pipe cutters will give you a much straighter edge.

Here are some basic instructions to help you successfully use a pipe cutter.

1. Decide exactly where on the pipe you would like to make a cut.
2. Loosen the handle on the pipe cutter and place it around the pipe.
3. Now tighten the cutter until the blade is in contact with the pipe.
4. Turn the pipe cutter a few turns around the pipe and it will score a line into the pipe.
5. Keep turning the pipe cutter around until you've cut the pipe off.
6. In order to create a nice straight edge inside the cut pipe you need to take the bottom blade out of the pipe cutter.
7. Place it into the cut end of the pipe and turn it around a few times until it's nice and smooth.

Is it worth me buying a pipe cutter or is it not something i'll ever get round to using?

If you plan to do any kind of plumbing work in your house i would strongly recommend that you invest in a pipe cutter. They give a much neater and easier finish than a saw but if you don't do much DIY and are more likely to call in a plumber than to do it yourself, don't bother spending the money.

Can i cut rebar with a hacksaw?

you can, but its not great for the teeth of the saw and it can get tiring. if you have any powersaws with metal cutting blades, that works best. if not, you can use the hacksaw but i hope you don't have too much rebar to cut

Should i use my pipe cutters on very thin or small metal piping?

no, it will probably be easier and better overall to use a sharp pair of pruning shears. if you dont have any good shears, you can use pipecutters

What are the advantages of using a pipecutter over a hacksaw?

pipecutters are faster, cleaner, more convenient, easier, and provide a cleaner cut. the only advantage of using a hacksaw is if the pipe is too big for the pipecutter to get around it

Toilet seat

Here's what I did. Unscrew them as much as possible. Then I used a bolt cutter and hacksaw to cut away as much of the plastic seat holders as possible. I could then remove most of the seat, and get better access to the screws. I then raised the loose screws enough to cut them with a bolt cutter. Soft screws cut easily. The screw heads are now out. Now, tap down on the screw/anchor and it falls into the bowl. It will stay there. The remaining problem is that you need anchors to secure the new toilet seat. Kohler wants $50. I have a usable but loose seat. Never again-Kohler.
I strongly recommend using a boltcutter. A hacksaw will tear up the bowl.

Installation of shut off valves

First shut off the main water supply. This is likely located close to your water meter where the main water supply enters your house. After shutting the water off, open a faucet on the lower level and let the water lines drain. Disconnect the water supply line running to the base of the fixture you will be working on. On some, this will just be a screw on connection, and on others it may be a soldered pipe. If it's soldered, use a hacksaw (or better yet, a pipe cutter) to cut the pipe in two places, about 2" down from the base of the fixture and also 6" to 10" further down the pipe. Use the reamer on the pipe cutter to remove any burrs on the copper pipes, and then clean them (with a piece of sandpaper or emery cloth) until they shine. Slide the compression nut from the shut off valve onto the pipe with the threads facing the open end. Then slide on the compression ring. Wrap the pipe with Teflon tape or spread plumbing joint compound on the end of the pipe, and then push the shutoff onto the end of the pipe. Slide the compression nut and ring up to the shut off valve and hand tighten the nut. Attach the compression fitting of the flexible supply tube to the other side of the shut off valve and hand tighten it as well. Attach the compression fitting on the supply tube to the base of the faucet and hand tighten it. Once all your compression fittings are attached and hand tightened, use an adjustable wrench to tighten them all firmly. Be careful you don't over tighten as this can bend the soft copper pipe out of round or damage a compression fitting. Turn the water back on and check for leaks. (Don't forget to open the shut off valve when you turn on the faucet.)
