Hi, i recently purchased iphone 3gs from another person and had same problem...i had to connect to a computer and re-download itunes to sync with my new sim card, you can try this

This is a new type of phone. Your sim card might be too old for the phone to recognize it. You should go to your carrier and ask for a new sim card. They should be able to replace the old one without extra cost.

just insert another sim card and check whether that sim card is working. also put your sim card in to another phone and check whether it is working.

Just go to provider, replace the old SIM CARD with new one. They will be give you the new SIM CARD with the same number ofcourse...
