SOURCE: The refrigerator temperature keeps dropping

I had the same problem with my GE GSS25LGMB and after some googling I learned that the damper door might be broken. Indeed after I took off the damper assembly the door appeared to be broken at the hinge. This door has its own thermostat and controls the influx of cold air into the fridge which explains the frozen food. I am trying to glue the broken piece back on. See if it works. Othwersie you'll have to replace the entire damper assembly which costs about $91. (http://www.pcappliancerepair.com/cgi-bin/detail.cgi?item=WR49X10091&brand=GEH)

SOURCE: my ge profile side by side refrigerator's

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

Did you check the door gasket see if it is gunked up or air is leaking on that side? Have you felt around the door see if cold air escape? If air is escape means you will get icing or frost.

PSC23NSTESS FREEZING VEGTABLES

Side by Side ModelsIf foods, such as fruits and vegetables, in the refrigerator are freezing, it can be caused by several things. First, check the controls. They should be set at "C" and "5" or "5" and "5". The proper fresh food temperature is between 38 and 42 degrees Fahrenheit. The freezer should be between 0 and 8 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • If food in the bottom of the refrigerator is freezing, this could be caused by a refrigerator not having enough food to absorb the cold air.
  • If food in the door is freezing, move the door bins up or down so they are one notch away from freezer vents (Side by Side models only).
  • The fresh food control should be at the normal setting of 5.

First, check the controls. They should be set at "C" and "5" or "5" and "5". The proper fresh food temperature is between 38 and 42 degrees Fahrenehit. The freezer should be between 0 and 8 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Since the cold air coming into the fresh food section originates in the freezer above, the rear of the top shelf will be the coldest spot in the fresh food area. Avoid placing delicate items that freeze easily on the back half of this shelf.
  • If food is freezing in the produce (fruits and vegetables) or meat pan, it may be that the temperature controls are not set high enough. Since cold air naturally falls, the pans can get too cold if the refrigerator is not running long enough to maintain good air circulation. Adjust both controls up one notch.

How to set a temperture

Hello,

By keep your refrigerator or freezer too cold, it unnecessarily wastes electricity. The recommended temperature is 37 to 40 degrees for the fresh food compartment of the refrigerator. The recommended temperature for the freezer compartment is 5 degrees. If you have a separate freezer for long-term food storage, it should kept at 0 to -5 degrees.

The following steps below is how to set the temperature of your refrigerator.

The first thing you must know is that your refrigerator should be set at 37-38 degrees. Anything at 40 or higher and you are risking food born illness (food poisoning) or spoiling your food.

Step 2
Place your magnetic thermometer in the refrigerator.

Step 3
Set your dial on your refrigerator to the second lowest setting. (If your refrigerator is already equipped with a digital thermostat, simply set it for 37 or 38 degrees and do not move on to the next step)

Step 4
After 2 hours, check your thermometer reading. If your reading is 38 degrees, there is no need to go higher and you are ready to put your groceries in. Be sure not to open and close your refrigerator during these two hours or your temperature reading will be incorrect.

If your reading is higher than 38 degrees, move your dial up to the next coldest setting and repeat the steps every two hours until you reach the correct temperature for your refrigerator.

Step 5
Once you have reached the correct refrigeration temperature for your refrigerator, place the magnetic thermometer in the refrigerator permanently and watch for changes.

Typically, your refrigerator temperature will need to be adjusted with the seasons, a higher setting in the summer and a lower setting in the winter.

Hope this helpout and take care.

My refridgerator is freezing some of my food a lot lately and now my temperature alarm is going off and the fridge temp is flashing from 38 to 56. i'm not sure what to do.

There are about six models that fall close to your model MFI2568AE
I have a feeling that if the fresh food section is freezing the food and the air damper is remaining open or you either have a problem with the air damper or the thermistor that opens and closes the damper that regulates that 38 degree temperature. These model are a little complex for some people but if you feel comfortable checking a few thing and using electrical testing meters then we can fix this together. Let me know and I will send you the service manual and we will go through this step by step, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Food freezing in refrigerator storage bins

produce has more water in it to freeze. Try turning down the temp in the fridge part of the unit you may try putting a termometer in there to gauge where it should be adjusted to, about 38-41 degrees is a safe temp for keeping food.

Temperature control

I would suggest buying a little refrigerator thermometer.
Turn the t-stat all the way up to the coldest setting. Watch the thermometer by checking it from time to time when it reaches 36 to 38 degrees slowly turn the t-stat down till you here the compressor shuts off. Remember water freezes at 32 degrees.
