Question about Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook

Keyboard problem The keyboard is fronzen even tough i've re-booted the system a couple of times. the mouse is frozen too, and there is no ps2 where i could attach an external keyboard. the power on / off button works fine. The hole keyboard frozen thing started when i added an usb flash disk, after reinstalling my windows. I am very aware that this could be a strictly hardware issue, but this happened only since i reinstalled my windows and added amd processor update software from the cd. now i cannot uninstall it anymore since keybord is frozen even in DOS. Thank you

Hi Tony,
It appears that you have an IBM desktop whose BIOS isn't capable of booting off of a USB keyboard and mouse device. Older computers used to require that a PS2 mouse and keyboard be attached before booting, to prevent you from booting a machine without any way of controlling it. You have 3 options:

1. leave the corded mouse and keyboard attached and never use them
2. update the BIOS for your desktop to the newest one in hopes that the updated BIOS will allow for USB mouse and keyboard operation
3. go to a computer store and get a PS2 to USB converter/adapter. They're small and relatively inexpensive. It plugs into the PS2 port, and makes your computer think that there's a PS2 device connected, when it's actually a USB device.

Could be a problem with your system BIOS, enter the setup while your computer is booting (before it gets to windows) by hitting the F12 key probably. Make sure that the boot order is HDD first, not something else.

No display

Sometimes a key malfunction of the keyboard does not allow the boot process to complete. Even if a pin of the PS2 jack of the keyboard/mouse is bent it will have the same effect. First check these 2 places and post the result as a comment & I'll try to respond accordingly................sodeep

Hi, Check in your Bios if Usb keyboard and Mouse Support is enabled, otherwise you can use a Ps2 Keyboard just to get to the desktop, then you should be able to install your keyboard and mouse, yor pc should automatically detect the devices

Keyboard and mouse not working when windows starts

Hi there.
While you are in the operating system, unplug both the USB devices, then plug them back in, let windows recognize the new hardware and install it for you, this can take a couple of minutes, once it says hardware is installed and ready to use reboot the PC and see if you can use the keyboard and mouse while in the OS.
please post back with any more problems

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!!

USB mouse won't work under XP in a dual boot Ubuntu GRUB 1.5

It has the latest mouse driver (logitech setpoint 4.0). Before installing Ubuntu the setup worked w/ SUSE/XP using GRUB dual boot. After installing Ubuntu XP does not see the usb mouse. Even Logitech setpoint does not have the mouse setup/configuration option. It appears that at boot it does not recognize the mouse or disables it. The BIOS has the usb keyboard and mouse enabled. Currently, I have two mices one for xp and either mouse will work under Ubuntu.

Mouse trouble

start (button) select control panel / system / hardware / device manager / mice & pointing device / double click, select wheel mouse (or whatever mouse you have) right mouse click, properties, select use this device (enable) - But I'm surprised you are having trouble with it.. Have you changed anything recently? Have you always used a ps2 mouse? Try connecting the mouse & re-booting the pc.. Also make sure it's plugged into the correct port, not the ps2 keyboard port.. Especially checkif you are using a usb keyboard.. Rgds
