Question about Toro& Electric Trimmer

1 Answer

Toro electric trimmer motor keeps stopping

My Toro 51307 electric trimmer is about 7 or 8 years old. It has always been pretty reliable until recently. As it got older, it became very sensitive to movement. If I hold the trigger and stand perfectly still, it will run no problem. As soon as I begin to move, it cuts out. It is normal for me to spend more time pulling the trigger and trying to hold it just right than actually trimming. Could this be a bad switch or is it just time to replace the whole trimmer?

Very possibly a bad switch or loose wire.

What thread is on a older toro gas straight shaft? it doesn't appear to be 3/8-24 LH but its close.

I like this question as it poses quite a challenge! Older Echos have the left handed threads on their crankshafts (and possibly even now)...but the shaft off the gear head would really confuse people who can't remove the head anyway if it was LH and that job in itself is a challenge also. Do you have any hardware that will thread onto it?...never seen an old Toro before! yes, 3/8 24 is a pretty standard SAE size...but certainly the Toro shaft could be close to that and some other size entirely > I hate to think in terms of metric on this.

Want down to down load owners manual for Toro 7 inch trimmer model 51556

If you use this link:

http://manuals.mtdproducts.com/mtd/Public.do?BrandCode=10001

Then type in your model and serial number, You can download your User's manual. Toro is pretty fussy about handing out manuals hence the model number AND serial number are required in their site.

Thanks for using FixYa,

After a couple of hours of use last week, the motor started slowing down. Turned it off and it would not restart. tried again after an hour and it started but sounded really rough. stopped it and took it...

sounds like the motor is worn out. Toro does not sell the motor separate. It is considered a throw away unit.
You will have to purchase a new one.
Sorry.
Good Day.

String breaking

Check to ensure that the string is the correct size as specified in the owners manual. If ok check age of the string. If old it has a tendancy to be brittle. If new and supple try letting the trimmer get up to full speed and let the tip of the string do the cutting. Avoid taking on too much at once with this trimmer as the electric and battery trimmers are not as powerful as their gas counterparts. I hope this helps.
