I also started getting the mystery spots - blue on light clothes and greasy stains on darks. Very frustrating. The Frigidaire repair guy said to buy new, even though the machine is only 5 years old.

If your washer has a slight rumble noise when on the spin then it is most likely that your bearings are on there way out, what it is is the bearings have grease in them and once the bearings start to go this grease starts to leak into the drum which is what the brown spots are it also leaks at the back around the bearing at the back of your outer drum and also leaks onto the floor this will need fixing by a domestic appliance engineer but it is sometimes cheaper to replace the washing machine

Small tar spots on my boardshorts from sitting on the rocks at the beach

Place a folded paper towel underneath the spots. Spray Goo Gone on the spots until they are saturated. Then use another paper towel to blot as much as possible. DON'T RUB. It will only spread it. Just blot. Then spray more GG on and wait a few minutes then launder with hot water and Oxy Clean. That should remove the tar stains.

Clothes left with grease smears

There are two real possibilities, both are in the washer. The first is
that the gear box seal is failing, and the second is that the fabric
softener dispenser needs to be dismantled and cleaned out.

"When the seal starts to fail, this oil floats up into the wash water
in the form of small black drops. The stains are almost impossible
to remove from clothing. Also, as the oil is leaking up, hot soapy
water is leaking down into the transmission, which will eventually
cause it to fail. As I recall, the seal wasn't difficult to replace,
but to get access to it I basically had to disassemble the whole
machine. The hardest part was pulling the agitator off the shaft - I
used a slide hammer puller. I'd start by pulling the agitator off and
see if you can access the transmission seal that way

Hi! We bought our WM2455H washer on February 1/2009 from Best Buy. Suddenly on several washes my clothes become spotted with brown grease. It does not occur at every wash, but what is happening. Please...

Do a tub clean cycle. Hottest water, no clothes, cup of bleach in washer, fill bleach dispenser with bleach, fill softener with bleach. Run once or twice. The 'grease' is actually residue from liquid detergent and/or softener. So stop using liquid detergent and switch to powdered (no residue believe it or not). Use plain white vinegar in place of softener. The acid eliminates the mildew residue and also helps get detergent residue out of your clothes. Good luck.

Small brown particles are found in filter and also what appeaars to be small grease stains on clothing what could be the problem?

The brown stains are likely coming from the felt drum seal. The OEM adhesive is tar based - and after time and use - breaks down.

You'll need a new felt seal - and the adhesive that is used should be silicone based... eliminating the brown streaks.

if it's appearing on whites mainly (hot cycle)...
This is from not enough HOT loads.

Fatty deposits gather between the basket and tub during COLD washes.

Then they are being released in large numbers when you do your whites on HOT.

It is recommended to do 1 HOT load per week.

Do an empty load with some degreaser added (like Goo-Gone) on the fullest/hottest setting you have.

Thanks for using FixYa

Remove agitator cap. Remove bolt underneath. lift off upper agitator and lower. Look for grease under agitator and on splined shaft and clean. Re-assemble be sure to put plastic thrust piece in between upper and lower agitator.

My Whirlpool Calypso top loading washer (purchased in June of 2002) is starting to leave brown or dirt colored marks on clothing and sheets (I think they are permanent!) - I don't see any obvious place...

Run the washer empty with vinegar on the hottest, longest cycle. Usually this is caused from fabric softener and liquid detergent build up. Use powder detergent only and don't use cold water to wash in all the time. Only use cold water for your bright, finer cloths. Cold water use causes detergent build up.

Iam getting brown spots on white shorts after washing with Kenmore front loading washing machine

If it's gunk or build up the marks should wash away. In this case run a long cycle using "affresh" or "washer fresh" with an empty load and use the hottest water available to help rinse the gunk out.

If the marks do not wash away, it could be grease due to a bearing failure. Listen for loud growling or grinding either by spinning the drum by hand or putting it into a spin cycle. If this is the case, the rear tub assembly (contains bearing) will need to be replaced. Not much can be done about the ruined clothes :(

Brown spotting on washed clothes

chances are if you have eliminated anything thats got in by accident that the drum bearings are about to go, the drum bearings are protected by a water seal, this has started to leak and is now washing the grease out of the bearings back into the wash, you may also find a small amount of water on the floor, if you also remove the back and look behind the large pulley you may also see brown water marks running from the center of the outer drum

the next step will be a very noisy spin, like a rumbling noise

DRUM BEARINGS sorry
