How can I remove the hard drive from a Sony VAIO PCG-F305?

As screen hinges and ribbon cable have broken on my Sony VAIO PCG-F305, I want to remove its hard drive to get at my files using another computer with external H/D unit, but how do I get into the Sony?

I have removed all screws adjacent to an arrow symbol plus the 2 sets of 3 screws at each end of the back of the base unit, but still cannot split the base away to gain access to the H/D.

See if you can find a bottom case and lcd hinges on ebay.

Just put in your computer's make and model in the search box.

My sony vaio freezes at the sony screen during boot

Most likely a hard drive problem but could be a number of things. Try pressing tab or escape when it freezes and see if the screen switches and gives more information. If you are able, remove the hard drive and try booting again. (the cd/dvd drive could also cause this so try removing that if possible)

PCG-K415B is the correct model number the label is possibly the service tage or something.

Here are the specifications of your laptop
  • Intel Celeron D Processor 345 3.06GHz / 533MHz FSB
  • 512MB DDR SDRAM - Low cost double memory Offer - call for details
  • 40GB Hard Drive
  • DVD Dual Layer Drive - To read DVDs and CDs and write CDs, DVD+, DVD- and large Dual Layer DVD
  • 15.4" XGA xblacklogo.jpg Widescreen TFT Screen
  • ATI Mobility Radeon 345M 64MB shared graphics

Screen on Sony VAIO PCG-SRX99 needs to be tightened.

you will have to take the bezel front plate of the screen off and check to see if anything there has broken from the hinges. there are usually two-three screws holding the hinge to the screens back cover and two-three holding it in place on the base of the laptop. if all those are intact you will need to replace the hinges.

good luck

The hard drive is hidden inside, and you have to take the palm rest off to get to it. Take the srews at the bottom out, take the keyboard off and replace the screws underneath. then pry off the palm rest. There are Laptop Repair Guides that show how to open a Laptop. Watch out for the ribbon cables, those tear easily. Replacement parts are usually available on Ebay. There are third party services that can do it for you, like Sony Repair NYC.
