Roller brush isn't rolling it seems to be stuck.

My Oreck XL Upright roller brush is not rolling smoothly on one end. I have removed it from the vacuum, it spins fine on one end. The spin is restricted on the belt side. It seems like the bearing is jammed, broken, etc. We are about ready to tear it apart to see what is going on with the bearing.

SOURCE: oreck xl

Sounds like the Oreck is clogged. You'll have to undo the bag by the way of the clip in the middle at the back of the main black spindel neck and then at the bottom. Then take apart the main neck by pushing the rubber mounts upwards to release the pip fitting locks and holes. You should find that either the top of the neck or the bottom - where the dust channel feeder is located - is clogged. Either that or there may be a clog in the main dust channel after the roller brush or wedged into the fan unit itself - the Oreck XL is a dirty fan system which means clogged dirt can often get stuck between the dirt and the dirt channel.

SOURCE: replace belt on my oreck xl

Either have to take the bottom plate off, or there is a small door with one screw to remove to replace the belt. Then it goes around the motor shaft and then over the pulley on the brush roll.

The belt is on properly, however the brush will spin, then stop.

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Oreck XL Classic. It sounds like the belt may be stretched out and my needs replacing. The average belt change is every 4 to 6 months and to store the extra belts in a Ziploc bag in the refrigerator. Also check the brushroll, the gray bearing ends with say on either side the words NEW or OLD and both ends need to be identical – new/new and old/old NOT new/old, if the belt and the brushroll are OK then it may be the motor but I don’t think so. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

SOURCE: how do I replace the brush roll on my oreck xl??

Turn the vacume upside down. Remove the 5 screws on the bottom plate. 3 are near the brush roll, and 2 are near the back. Remove the bottom plate. take the belt off the motor end. pull up on both ends of the brush roll. Put new brush roll on making sure that you put both ends to the new position, not old. ( it is marked on one end, and there are marks on the side that goes up so the can match.)(If putting back the old brush roll you can switch to the old position. After a year or two you can switch the new brush roll to the old position.) Put the bels back on the motor shaft and then stretch and start the belt on the brush roll and rotate the brushroll by hand untill the belt is all the way on.
put the bottom plate back on and tighten the 5 bottom screws.

SOURCE: installing roller brush for oreck XL 21

uh, probably not sure what the issue is, but
1. unplug unit.
2. Remove the multiple screws from the bottom of the unit.
3. remove the bottom baseplate (usually black)
4. the brush roll is now visible, and the belt should be around it.
5. Pull the brush roll away from the unit, and disengage the belt.
6. Replace in the opposite order. Make sure that baseplate fits properly to insure a good seal. Also watch the bumper (rubber part that is wrapped around the unit) to make sure it is properly seated.
7. Handroll the roller brush before plugging in. Make sure it moves freely.
8. Run unit, may get a slight burning smell, but if this continues for more than a minute - turn off and inspect the unit. Brush roll requires a short burn in time, on initial build, factory accomplishes this during test procedures.

Why does my Oreck upright. Acumen keep shutting off after a couple of seconds?

Atek,
Sounds like you have one of the Oreck's that has a sensor that looks for the brush turning and you received the wrong brush. Look to see if there is a metal ball embedded in the wood about a quarter or a third of the way down from the end opposite the belt end. If there is not the metal ball, you have the wrong brush roll. Getting the proper brush roller should make all the difference for you. Hope this helps!

Replacing the belt for the motor

the brush roller lifts up and out. Just lift it out but your belt around the roller and belt shaft and push the brush roller back down. I own one too.

Oreck brush only turns a tiny bit and belt pulley get hot belt not turning much either

If your brush is not turning properly then you need to check the bearing ends to see if there is any hair, string, or thread wound around the brush shaft. If there is and you can remove it, that might fix your problem otherwise I would suggest getting a new brush roller.

Changing the belt

Always make sure your machine is unplugged from the outlet before replacing the belt.
Newer Oreck uprights have an access plate on the right hand side of the base (as you're looking at it from the front). Remove the one screw from the access plate and slide it forward. Snake the new belt around the brush roll pulley and then strrrrrrretch it back to the motor shaft. Replace the access plate.
If your model does not have an access plate; turn the machine upside down, Remove all screws. Lift the bottom plate off. Observe the position of the brush roll ends, One side of each end cap will have several notches cut into it,this is the 'new' side, the other side is smooth, this is the 'old' side. You can reposition the brush roll the the 'old' side if your bristles appear worn down.
With the brush roll still removed; place one end of the belt over the motor shaft first, place the other side of the belt around the brush roll pulley and stretch the brush roll forward until it is back in place.
Spin the brush roll by hand before replacing the cover to ensure the belt is not pinched.
Replace to cover.

Check that the beater bar is completely clear of thread, this will bring the brush roll back to normal. Also check the sides of the brush roll doesn't have anything such as thread or thick string at the sides.

Oreck XL Roller-Disassembly

I always get confused, but I think it is clock wise. Stick a small blade screw driver under the end cap and pry out, it should pop off, it covers a bearing. That is the problem with the Oreck brush rolls, the ends go bad long before the bristles get worn down.
