Question about Nikon D40 Digital Camera with G-II 18-55mm Lens

1 Answer

When I turn on my Nikon D40 with the 18-55 mm lens set to autofocus I get an error message "Error. Turn Camera off and then on again." If I turn the lens switch to manual, I do not get the error. If I attache my 70-300 mm lens, I get the error regardless of the lens focus switch psition. I have just upgraded the firmware with no improvement.

Hello

The problem is that the lens has become stuck in the barrel. There are some DIY solutions you could try, but the probability is that you will have to get it fixed by a professional.

Use these at own risk as it may further damage the camera.

Firstly , try connecting your ac adapter or usb cable.

Try holding the shutter button while switching on the camera.

Look at the lens , and if some of the lens 'circles' is misaligned or not concentric then try wiggling it (while holding camera lens down).

Try gently pushing or pulling the lens when it extends but this is risky as it may cause the lens barrel to slip out of its guidance system.

Another way to do this is to place the camera lens down on a hard surface and then power it up. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to not scratch your lens or casing. Let the lens push the camera up and down a few times and sometimes the little resistance provided by the camera is enough to get things going again.

Try hitting your camera near the lens on the body with the soft tissue on the palm of your hand.

Other than that , I would take the camera to a repair center for a evaluation to see if it would cost more to repair than to replace the camera.

If it is still under warranty I would suggest you take it in before trying any of these steps and remove any off-brand batteries or accessories as some stores are really fussy about warranty repairs on camera's with non-brand accessories.

You can also have a look at THIS link.

Hope the advise is useful. please do not hesitate to let me know if you need any further assistance.

Regards
Andrea

I have a Nikon D40x and purchased the AF nikkor 50 mm f/1.8D lens a couple years ago, but find that it can only be focused manually. Is there any way to "turn on" the autofocus? I have not had...

Sorry, but the D40x lacks an autofocus motor, depending on the lens to have one. Nikon calls such lenses AF-S. This particular lens does not have such a motor, relying on the camera to have one. The only 50mm lens currently available with an autofocus motor is this one:
http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product/Camera-Lenses/2180/AF-S-NIKKOR-50mm-f%252F1.4G.html

Earlier this week the Nikon web site listed a new 50mm F1.8 lens with an autofocus motor, but then it was removed. Hopefully they will officially announce this lens soon.

Something has happened to my camera and now when i turn it on the screen is black and it says : Lens error , how do i fix it ?

From Nikon's website regarding this problem:
http://instrument-support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/15978/~/lens-error-message

"Having a "Lens error" message display on the camera's LCD display indicates a problem with the camera lens mechanism. This situation generally requires that the camera be sent to a Nikon Service Department for repair. Before doing this however, be sure to check these situations below:
  1. One possible reason for this error is if the camera is switched on and the lens unit is prevented from extending. The camera will struggle for a second to extend the lens, then report the problem. Inspect the lens for any obvious obstruction, then turn the camera off, then on again. Usually, simply switching the camera Off then On again is enough to correct this problem.
  2. Remove and recharge and/or replace the battery. If the error does not clear up right away, leave the battery out of the camera overnight, and try again the next day.
If the above tips do not help, then we regret the camera must be sent to our Nikon Service department as there are no user serviceable parts on Nikon Coolpix cameras."

I used the Nikon D90 with Lens Kit 18-200 mm, and I also bought the new Lens call Nikkor 75-300mm. But when I connected the new one (Nikkor 75-300 mm) in my camera and took some pictures, after that I...

That's the Nikon error message for a lens with aperture ring set to something other than the minimum (i.e. highest number).
The camera insists on controlling the aperture ring, and to do so, the ring must be set to the minimum setting.
Unless it is a "G" lens, which has no aperture ring whatsoever.
The camera body sets the aperture of the lens wide open while auto-focusing, and displaying through the viewfinder. When it comes time to flip the mirror up and take a picture, the camera dials the aperture to the setting you (or the camera) have selected.

You might want to check the position of the aperture ring on the lens. If it is not set at the highest number, ( IE smallest aperture, f22,f32 ), then the camera will display that error message
