Adjusting the bobbin tension

hi genevieve.
this is all i could find.
To make a temporary tension adjustment, select the threads for the needle and bobbin, then fill the bobbinand thread the machine. Make a test seam on the fabric that you plan to sew, examine the stitches, then see if you can find a balance using the upper-tensionassembly alone.2 Nov 2008

Serger Adjustment

Whichever thread that is causing the loops may not be seated properly in the tension disk. Remove all the threads. Be sure to RAISE the presser foot BEFORE threading any of the threads. Re-thread from the beginning. With each thread, hold the thread above the tension guides and give each a tug below the tension disk to make sure the threads pop into place. Set all the tension disks at the midpoint between the high & low numbers. Test sew.

If it appears the threads are pulling through loosely, could be the tension disk(s) are not functioning properly. Can try cleaning them:

Remove the threads and loosen all the tension disks to the loosest possible setting. Raise the presser foot. Dampen a length of pearl cotton thread with rubbing alcohol and gently pull it down a couple of times between each tension disk.

Tighten the tension disks. Rethread and test your machine. If the tension is still too loose, may need service.

As for adjusting timing, search the internet for YouTube videos or web sites that show how to do that.

I am having trouble getting the bobbin to function properly during sewing.

It could be the top thread is the problem. Might try removing all the thread. Consult the owner's manual for threading instructions. RAISE the presser foot BEFORE threading the upper thread so the thread will seat properly in the tension disk. Re-thread from the beginning carefully following the instructions--do not miss any spots or thread guides.

If top thread is still creating a mess of loops under the fabric, try tightening the upper tension. The tension is ideal when both upper and bobbin threads meet in the middle of the fabric.

I can't get the tension right. The stitches on the top side are too loose and the thread just pulls out.

loosen the needle thread tension of a bit
sew on a scrap bit of material until you get the tensions right
correct tension is when the bottom thread and the top thread meet at the join of the two pieces being sewn
you will only need to sew 1" to see how it is going

How to adjust the bobbin tension.

According to the manual, you should not need to adjust the bobbin tension (and I located other sites which stated the bobbin tension cannot be adjusted on this machine). Apparently, all the tension adjustment is accomplished through the upper thread::
"EN Thread Tension Upper thread tension Basic thread tension setting: "4". (1) To increase the tension, turn the dial to the next number up. To reduce the tension, turn the dial to the next number down. A. Normal thread tension for straight stitch sewing. B. Thread tension too loose for straight stitch sewing. Turn dial to higher number. C. Thread tension too tight for straight stitch sewing. Turn dial to lower number. D. Normal thread tension for zig zag and decorative sewing. Correct thread tension is when a small amount of the upper thread appears on the bottom side of fabric. Lower thread tension The bobbin tension has been set correctly at the factory, so you do not need to adjust it. Please note: - Proper tension setting is important for strong seams. - There is no single tension setting appropriate for all stitch functions, thread or fabric. - A balanced tension (identical stitches both top and bottom) is usually only desirable for straight stitch construction sewing. - 90% of all sewing will be between "3" and "5". - For zig zag and decorative sewing stitch functions, thread tension should generally be less than for straight stitch sewing. - For all decorative sewing you will always obtain a nicer stitch and less fabric puckering when the upper thread appears on the bottom side of your fabric. 1 A B C 22 D"

Doing further research, I found this statement on a machine review site:
"After reading reviews online from where I've bought my drop-in bobbin machines, I think many of the negative reviews are due to the bobbin thread coming up without laying across the bobbin. It can cause the stitches to look very sloppy and no amount of tension adjusting can fix the stitches."

There are several machine review sites wherein 4423 owners stated their disappointment in the 4423's performance. Some said the machine failed almost immediately and others said the machines developed problems when sewing heavy fabric.

Why is there extra thread underneath the fabric

Check the tension on the top thread. Be sure all is threaded correctly. If the top tension is ok, the bobbin tension may need to be tightened. Also, be sure that everything is oiled properly, as this can affect function.

Singer sewing machine 6215c trouble w/stitching - top looks fine, underside all loops of thread

The problem is actually with the upper thread not having enough tension on it. Check your upper tension setting,,,it should be set about mid range of its adjustment (4,5 or 6). To see if the tension is functioning correctly thread the machine and raise the presser foot to its up position and pull thread thru the needle. It should pull easily, lower the presser foot down to the fabric and now the thread should become harder to pull. If there is no change in the pull, then either the thread is not in the tension correctly ot the tension is not working,

There might be a piece of thread or lint caught in the bobbin tension preventing it from functioning correctly.
