How do I restore my computer using the eRecovery Management program outside of Windows? How do I restore my computer using the eRecovery Management program outside of Windows?
Select models, with Microsoft Windows, have the ability to have the Operating System reinstalled from a hidden partition built into the computer.
Note: During the process, all data stored on your computer will be overwritten. This means all your files, such as email and photos, will be erased. Therefore, we recommend making a backup of all personal data before starting the recovery process.
Note: For video guided assistance using the eRecovery Management program to restore your computer please visit our How do I restore my computer using the eRecovery Management program? answer.

To start the system recovery:

  1. Restart the computer.

  3. If you are prompted with a Microsoft Windows boot screen, press the Enter key.
  4. After the system recovery application has loaded, follow the prompts to reinstall the Operating System.
If the ability to reinstall from the previous method is not available or fails, recovery of the Operating System will need to be from Recovery Media. If you do not have a set of Acer Recovery Media, you may purchase the set online from the Acer Recovery Media Order Form..
Note: If your computer does not have an internal optical disc drive, an external optical disc drive will be required in order to recover the Operating System using Acer Recovery Media.
  1. Restart the computer.
  2. When the Acer logo appears on the screen, press the F12 key repeatedly to enter the computer's Boot Menu.
  3. Press the CD-ROM drive eject button and insert the disc labeled System CD.

Acer ERecovery Service is Not Available

What is the ERecovery Service?
On Acer Computers there is a floating toolbar on the desktop called the Acer Empowering Technology program. Within this program there is the ERecovery Service that allows a user to create backup operating system disks, create a backup of the current system, and more. This is a very handy feature because in many cases the computer does not come with a set of backup disks.

The icon for the ERecovery service looks like this one:

erecoveryicon.jpg

If you dont see this icon on the Empowering Technology bar then the application is not installed and will not be available.

How to Open ERecovery Service

There are three ways to access the ERecovery Service.

  1. Press ALT-F10 when the computer is first turned on. If you see the Windows XP or Vista splash screen you've waited too long and will have to shut the computer down and try it again.
  2. Find the ERecovery Service icon on the Acer floating toolbar and click it.
  3. Click on Start, All Programs, Acer Empowering Technology, and click on the icon for Acer ERecovery Management.
Downgrading from Vista to XP - "ERecovery Service is Not Available"

On many Acer models, the computer is preinstalled with Windows Vista, but it comes with a set of Windows XP Professional disks that allow you to uninstall Vista and reinstall Windows XP. Unfortunately, the hidden partition (PQService) that enables the ERecovery feature remains with a Windows Vista image. So, after the reinstallation of Windows XP, the Erecovery service is not available and you'll see a screen similar to the one below when you try to access it from within Windows.

25f31d0.jpg

You can still access the ERecovery Service using the Alt-F10 trick when the computer first starting booting, but you'll be disappointed to see the Windows Vista OS instead of Windows XP . Dont proceed with the ERecovery at this point unless you want to restore the system back to Vista.

How to Reset an Password for Acer eRecovery

Acer eRecovery is a vendor-specific method you can use to restore your computer to its original factory settings, or to custom settings you create and store on your hard drive or other removable media. eRecovery also contains a back-up utility you can use to back up data to your hard drive or other removable media. Access to eRecovery requires you to use the default "000000"password or one you select. While it is important to store a custom password in a safe location, if you lose or forget it, there are steps you can take to reset your Acer eRecovery password.
Access the Diskpart command prompt. Acer stores custom eRecovery passwords on your computer in PQService, a hidden rescue partition. Locating this partition requires accessing the Diskpart utility from the command prompt. Diskpart allows you to run a scan on your hard drive and bring up hidden partitions.

02d2ca3.pngstep 1. To access Diskpart, go to "Start" and type "cmd" in the Search bar to bring up the black command prompt box, and then type "diskpart" at the prompt to switch to a Diskpart prompt. Depending on your computer, a new command prompt may open with the Diskpart prompt.
Step 2. Scan your computer configuration. At the Diskpart prompt, type "rescan" to run a system configuration check. When the scan finishes, you will receive a message informing you the scan is complete. At the command prompt, type "list disks" to bring up available disks and then type "select disk 0."
Step 3. Locate the hidden partition. At the command prompt, type "list partition" to view a list of partitions on your disk. Locate the partition with no name and a size of approximately 10 GB. At the command prompt, type "select partition (number)."
Step 4. Determine the partition type and unhide the partition. The hidden PQService partition will be either a type 27 or a type 12 partition. If the partition is type 27, unhide it by typing "set id=07 override," and if a type 12, then unhide it by typing "set id=0B" at the command prompt.
Step 5. View PQService partition. Return to the disk containing PQService by typing "select disk 0" at the command prompt, and then type "list volume" to view the contents of the disk. PQService will be visible in the list, preceded by a number. Type "select volume (number)" and then assign PQService a new drive letter so you will be able to open and view it from your computer interface window. At the command prompt, type "assign letter=f."
Reset eRecovery Password
Step 1. Open PQService. Navigate to the drive containing PQService. If you are using Windows XP, use My Computer; if you are using windows Vista, use Computer. Find the file "aimdrs.dat." Right click on the file and select "Open with" and then "Textpad," "Notepad," or whatever text editor you prefer.
Step 2. Open file and find password. Open the file with your text editor and locate the eRecovery password. Look for a line that reads, "Password=password name," "Hint=the password hint." Write down the password and close the file.
Step 3. Open eRecovery using the recovered password and follow instructions to create a new password.

Erecovery password

erecovery password
Acer has a software named eRecovery. This software dedicated to their customers in order to get Windows OS recovery process a lot more easier and faster even a kid able to do it.

Acer created a hidden partition labeled PQSERVICE

You wouldn't able to see this partition in Windows explorer. If you want to see this partition existance, right-click My Computer -> Manage -> Disk Management

PQSERVICE partition contain an image of Windows OS (XP/Vista/Seven) and this partition will be load to recover anytime when your Windows OS crashed, unstable, or infected by virus.

By pressing ALT+F10 before entering Windows boot process, you will access Acer eRecovery menu and asked the location where the backup will restore (ussually C: Drive). After few simple clicks (as easy as click Next) you will have your Windows back as 'factory default' state (State when you bought your Acer machine)

But how if there are password required for eRecovery? The windows is crashed and unfortunately... you don't know the password?

Here are the tricks!

Try the default password 000000

I try rebooting and get an ntdlr missing ctrl alt del to restart error

You need to reinstall the os. you might learn that copying file will be an option but thats not a good option. after NTLDR, tehre are 7 other files you may need to copy. so simply and easiest way is to reisntall the os.

step 1. You can press <Alt+F10> or the Empowering Key to launch in a Windows environment, or press <Alt+F10> during boot up. For the Veriton desktop series, you can also press the hardware reset button at any time. For the Aspire or AcerPower desktop series, an Acer eRecovery Management icon can be found on the desktop screen.
If this fails.

step 2

Back up all data on your computer before reinstalling. Insert the Windows XP disk and restart your computer.

Press any key when prompted to begin running the disk.

Press F8 to agree to the terms of service.

Choose the partition you want to reinstall Windows XP on. This is usually "C:" for most users.

Choose the type of format. You can choose either "Quick" or "Full" for NTFS systems. A quick format only takes a few minutes less than the full format.

Wait for the format to complete. The Windows XP installation wizard will begin. You will be asked to choose your time zone, computer name, and to input any network information. Otherwise, the reinstall will run by itself.

Warning!

The prompts during the reinstall will occur 10 to 15 minutes after the wizard begins. Use the original product key or the Windows XP installation will not activate. You will need to call Microsoft if your product does not activate. The number is listed on the activation window. This process will cause data loss.

The best option would be to connect the hard disk to another computer which has an optical drive, load the OS into it and return it back to its native PC. Or as you asked, you can check for other solutions too

Missing Windows XP Product Key-Need to Reinstall/Repair XP

I'm assuming you have quite a lot of computer savvy??? You'll need to access that drive and get the original key off it. Try connecting the drive to another pc and see if you can get to the Windows folder. Once there, use Jellybean Keyfinder to navigate to the Windows folder in that drive and take note of the OS key. From there you can reformat and use the existing key.
