Question about ASUS SDRW-08D2S-U/BLK/G 8X Slim External DVD Writer Optical Drive Black USB2.0 Burner
I bought an Asus varidrive about 6 months ago, it used to work just fine. But I just tried to use it and its not working. When I plug it in the computer does recognize that I pluged something, but when I try to insert a cd or dvd the external drive wont take it in. Any ideas as to what I should do?
Does the drive accept the disk then spit it out or does it never close the door?

a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

First try a system restore back to the last date which you remember that it worked. If that doesnt help, you must find out what cd/dvd burning software is in your computer. It may have been corrupted. Oddly enough, you don't need drivers for the CD/DVD drives. They aren't even recognized unless you have a good non-microsoft burning program. Find out what burning software you have--download Belarc Advisor, a free program (Google it) which not only tells you everything in your computer, with model and serial numbers for hardware and all of your software (with their unique codes), but will also inform you if you are missing any needed Windows updates. Once you know what you have, if it came with the computer, you have to seek an upgrade at the computer manufacturer's website, as it may be a special program not related to the burning software purchased from the software manufacturer---go to their website for upgrades.

Try installing the drivers from Asus for your EXACT model of computer. Many of Microsoft's drivers are generic in nature and do not take advantage of the hardware installed by manufacturers because they can't always "talk" to their hardware.
Go to Asus's web site, type in your model number under the "Download Drivers" section and it will take you to a page where you can find the specific driver for your drive and hopefully get it back to seeing both CDs and DVDs.
