Question about Dell Inspiron 8000 Notebook
I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop, and cannot get it connected to the internet. I have tried two different wireless adaptors, and tried it with both the router at home and one in a hotel when I was away, and each time it says it's connected to the router but won't give me a through connection to the net itself. IP and DNS settings are correct, routers were set to allow wireless. Router at home used to work fine, think it's computer-related as the Netgear USB adaptor used to work fine and get me connected. Now it doesn't, and the newer Belkin one made no difference, same problem outline above. Anyone able to help?
When you say "IP and DNS settings are correct", can you define what "correct" is? IP and DNS settings change depending on the wireless network they're using, so one setting will not work for all networks. The most "correct" setting you can have is probably DHCP - which is called "Obtain IP address automatically" and the same for DNS. If your laptop has any statically assigned IP information, make a note of what they are, and then change it to DHCP and see if you have better luck. If you have statically assigned IP information, it will allow you to connect to the wireless network, but not provide internet access because your IP scheme and DNS settings are wrong. It sounds like the scenario you're describing.
