Question about Canon PowerShot S1 IS Digital Camera

4 Answers

Black screen Hi, I have a Powershot S1iS (CANNON), and it worked just fine for about 2 years now. Last week - suddenly the screen went black, and I can not see anything. When I switch to see the pictures I've taken before, I am able to do that, and I do see them. When I try to take a picture - I'm able to, but the picture is black. Can it be a memory card problem (since it's a new one, and I didn't swap it, to verify that). Thanks - Shlomi coshlomi@gmail.com

    Hi,

    First - Thanks for trying!

No, it did not help. I forgot to mention that I have tried it before, and also did a complete reset of the camera.

    Thanks again,

I have this identical camera model, Powershot S1 IS, as well and have had it for 2.5 yrs. Cosmetically it's in excellent condition and has never been dropped. It's even stored and moved in a well cushioned camera case (we've been careful as $300 for us is expensive for a camera). And we expected it to last at least 5-7 years, maybe more.

Just 2 wks ago we were in Gatlinburg Tennessee and I took one picture in the Ripley's Shark Aquarium. It turned out fine, but then the screen went black immediately. I can scroll through and view my pictures and videos from the 1 gig memory card just fine, but it will not take or record anything but black pictures and completely dark video clips. We are very disappointed to say the least as this camera functioned flawlessly and did us well until now and, of course, being out of warranty we don't know if it'd be cost effective to get this fixed or just trash it and sink another $300 into something we're uncertain will last or not.

Please help if anyone can. I plan on contacting Canon support this week and will try letting everyone know the outcome, whether they are willing to help or not.

    Thanks

Hi! I have a very similiar problem. My screen has turned hot pink and black and is snowy. I was able to take a few pictures but they printed out pink. This is my 3rd Canon (and maybe my last as I've had problems with all 3 of them). I'm going to contact Canon and see what to do.

I have a canon Pc1130. I am able to see the pics, but when i try to take a pic the screen turns black and it says to change the batteries. I've put new batteries in and the problem remains.

Someone else posted that Canon fixed it for free.

Here's a link to the Canon service site that explains their take on the problem. Yes they will fix it if it is indeed a CCD issue.

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&fcategoryid=225&modelid=13390&keycode=2112&id=29819

I have a similiar problem.
My symptoms are:
- flip out LCD will not display image while taking a picture
- flip out LCD will dispaly images from memory
- small eyepiece will display image, so camera is still functional in that it can take a picture.

This sounds like the CCD problem common to these cameras.  I had similar trouble and Canon fixed it for free (including shipping!)

First check your camera option press display button if not solved it is a hardware problem with your camera LCD, maybe move it wrong way please concern your cannon department.Black screen - 43a5872.jpg

My Canon PowerShot SD880 IS has a black display screen. I cannot take pics now with the black screen, but the display DOES work for pics taken before the screen went black. Please help!

I don't have a solution, but I have the same problem. I found one posting elsewhere that said that this was a "common" problem. That person's camera was under warranty. Mine isn't, but it's less than 2 years old.

Cannon SD 750 - when i try to take a picture a black screen appe

Think that you accidentally pressed the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the LCD display on and off to save batteries. You would then use the optical viewfinder in its place. To turn the screen back on, just press the DISP button one more time.

Try lithium batteries. Sometimes regular batteries even when new cannot run a digital camera.

Try setting your camera to mass storage instead ptp.
Reinstall the software of canon. Also see if the camera is in transfer mode rather in shooting mode.
Check if your card is accidently locked somehow.
Always try to load original driver cd and software that came with the camera.

There are quite a few of us with symilar problem, but the screen is not completely black: it has some purple or pinkish color when facing light. Old pics and menu can still be viewed. I noticed 4 symilar threads on Canon A95 within the last 5 mins without any search, just looking at the top questions.
