Alison manages the Oracle team responsible for SQL*Plus. She has posted here from time-to-time. Google for Alison Holloway in this group. -- Daniel A. Morgan Relational theory is not something that is simply a nice-to-have. http://www.psoug.orgdamor @x.washington.edu (replace x with u to respond)

Let me see if I've got this correctly.
You somehow have come to the conclusion that Oracle developers are so good that when they coded the 8i client they knew all of the specs and functionality for 10g ... put it into the source code and tested it? Alison will be thrilled. I'll bet she didn't know her team was that good.
Oh and Sybrand's comment too. -- Daniel A. Morgan http://www.psoug.orgdamor @x.washington.edu (replace x with u to respond)

Check if there is a mismatch in charactersets between your client and server. It seems like thats the problem. Try to use a characterset that is supported in 8.1.6 on your 10g database also.
