The cable you can buy at any Walmart, Kmart, Best Buy, and Staples for Like $10

From what i under stand they try to get you to buy the cable from them so they can ****** you into buying extra stuff from them.

Yesterday, I purchased a Garmin Nuvi 2360LMT for my grandfather. I have read the instructions on how to register it but now, I have the usb connected to the computer and the Garmin, my computer will not...

Here is what you need to do to update the map your Garmi nuvi 2360lmt; first make sure the unit is fully charged, then go to the Garmin web site and register your product. Next download Garmin Updater and connect your nuvi with a USB cable directly to your computer and not thru a USB hub. I would also try a different usb port. See if it show up in Computer or My computer in Windows 7/Vista or XP.
Let the update go directly to the GPS and not a folder. It will take a few hours even with a fast internet connection. When done follow the instructions on your screen. I have attached a link to the Garmin site. Thanks for using FixYa

Hi I have a Garmin Nuvi 215W bought in South Africa. I desperately need a Europe map, as I am now living/working in the Netherlands (Holland). Very few stores stock Garmin products in Netherlands, more...

Maps of Europe for Garmin GPS devices can be purchased on line. You'll need a USB cable to connect the Garmin to your computer. Then, with the USB cable connected, go to

On the web site, first register your product. Then look for "Support" and follow their instructions for updating your software. (Software updates are free.) After you've done that, look for "Maps" on the menu at the top of the screen. By the way, maps are huge files, so plan on the map download and installation taking several hours or maybe even overnight to update your maps even if you have a fast internet connection.

Trying to find where to register my nuvi 1390

Go to the following website:

You can register yourself as well as your Garmin product. If you have the USB cable that should have come with your GPS unit you can plug one end into your GPS, and the other into your computer. After loading a small program the site will automatically register your unit, and then take you to a site that will allow you the choice of downloading maps, extras for the GPS, and other useful items. If you don't have the cable, you can still manually enter the model and serial numbers. Depending on your model number, you are allowed either one free map update if you register within 90 days of your purchase date, or you might have lifetime updates if your model came with that feature.

Thank you for the opportunity to assist you in resolving your issue. Should you need further information or assistance please do not hesitate to let us know.

Having problems setting up my device

What are you exactly trying to do? Setting up the GPS as in registering the unit? Before you can use any Garmin GPS you must register the unit online.
Don't know which unit you have but if its a Nuvi I can help you get started...
with the unit off ...use the supplied USB cable and connect to a computer ( you can also use any usb camera cable )
your computer will detect the usb plug in.... you can minimize the pop up box
Go to the site will detect your unit
register your unit there and get the maps unlocked and firmware update

Is it necessary to register this product online in order to use it? I am not finding anything that lets me register.

It's not necessary to register it to use it. However if you want to update the map you will need to register it. To register you connect the satnav to your computer. Go to and select your country. Click on MyGarmin and then click Register Your Garmin Product. You'll be asked to create a username and password. Write them down and keep them safe as you'll need them again if you need to update your maps.

What will i need to down load maps

To download a map you need to connect your satnav to a computer with the usb cable. Go to If you haven't already registered your satnav with garmin you'll need to do so. You'll have to create a username and password to register. Write them down and keep them safe as you'll need them again if you need to update the map or buy new maps again.
If you don't have webupdater installed you'll need it. It can be downloaded from When you've registered click on My Garmin, then on MyMaps. If there is an update for the map on your satnav it will be shown there. Click get update. You'll need a credit card to pay for it. Map sizes can be very big e.g. europe is around 4 Gb so you'll need a broadband connection to download it. If you don't have broadband you can order it on DVD.
If it's a map of a new country you want Click on MyMaps and then click Shop for more maps an follow the prompts.

Need a sd card or cable to load 2009 maps i only have the gps and the 12 volt cable how and what do i need to update my maps

Any local electronics store can sell you the USB cable - make sure you get the mini-size connector on the end for your GPS (take the GPS into the store to be certain). The go to and see what you want to purchase.

But - BEWARE! The site will be glad to sell you map updates (for a ridiculously high price) that might not fit. Might be better off buying the maps on an SD card. I'm struggling right now with the Lifetime NA update for the nuvi 200W; can't get the entire map to fit, even though the original map purchased with the unit in Jan 2008 had all of NA. (can anyone help with this? I've tried all the obvious - deleting waypoints, languages, updating firmware, etc. Really bugs me!

How do I update my Garmin

You actually have to buy a cable to do that, it's a mini-USB to USB cable. It normally goes for a few is a link for you.

There are other brands and lenghts but I think you get the idea now, right? Make sure that the mini connection matches the back of the Nuvi's connection, if you have an electronic store near your house take it with you and show the salesperson.

As for updating the unit itself, well you have to purchase the maps from Gamin. If you just bought it, you may qualify for a free map update when you register the unit. Click on the following link..

Register for an account, it's important that you do. Specially if you start purchasing maps from them, they save all that info for you so if your computer crashes you can just reinstall all your maps again using the codes they save for you. Then register your NUVI and see if you qualify...Good Luck!!
