Question about Garden

1 Answer

I have a Champion Longlife 3.5hp Rototiller. It appears that the upper bearing to the gearbox is shot. I need to pull the sheaves(pulleys) off the top end before I can drop the gear bos w/tines from the bottom of the frame. There is a bolt with flat washer on top of the sheaves into the drive shaft which I have removed. There is a keyway I can see from the top of the shaft/sheave, but I do not see any set screws. The question is - How do the sheaves come off the shaft? I have tried PB Blaster and brute force.... Thanks, Wayne

I placed the washer and bolt back into the top of the shaft and struck the bolt head with a downward force after the penatrating oil had been working on it for two days of repeated applications. The Bushing and seal were shot, made a new bushing and will not replace the seal. There is no way for lubrication to get that far up the shaft of the gearbox to keep the seal/bushing operable under normal operations so I will lube from the top periodically.

Why burning belt on 48" Craftsman riding mower

Since you mentioned "48-inch riding mower" let's assume your question is about the mower deck and not the overall mower or its main drive belt (if manual shift-on-the-fly model). If the belt burns that means it is running but slipping against something; or that the drive sheave us turning against an impeded belt. In the first case the belt will be burned along its length; in the second the burning will be occuring in one location(s) along the belt. In any case of belt slippage, check first that all tensioners (springs) are properly in place and not broken or fatigued and in need of replacement. The only other thing would be resistance to belt running, such as:
blade blockage; blade rotor resistance from lack of grease or ruined bearing in need of replacment; grass clogging on deck underside or under blade drive pulley on deck top side; a pully sheave out of round; an obstacle between belt and sheave that is preventing free turn of sheave and belt run; misrouted belt; an overstretched belt that cannot be sufficiently tensioned. Inspect and correct or replace as needed.

My Earthquake Rear Tine Gas Rototiller - 196cc Viper Engine 4-cycle just makes a squeeling noise and tines won't rotate.

Sounds like the belt is slipping. Have you removed the belt cover and inspected the belt and the tensioner pulley ? If your model is like mine the tension can be adjusted just below the handles by looseneing the nut where the cable goes into the cable sheath and moving the cable cover further away from the handle. That takes up some slack and will make the tensioner pulley tighter on the belt. If the belt is shot tension isn't going to help.
Try "google" with "earthquake 5070 manual" first option should be a PDF copy of a model 5070 manual. Will have diagrams on how to adjust the cables.

Belt keeps breaking when put a new one on that controls aternator, water pump, etc on my 1995 Nissan pick up truck

if it keeps breaking you either have atension or alignment problem. Alignment will show on the edges of the belt and you should be able to catch a bit of burnt rubber smell on the belt. Unless you have done major work orpulled something thatbwould have moved a pulley my bet would be on tension. on a serpintine belt there is atensioning pulley and these do wear out. When the tension is out the belt can slap and break

Need replacement pulley for a Delta DP350

I have a $14 fix for your dead Delta DP 350
My Delta DP 350 died as well...the Reeves pulley disintegrated....
I found a real beefy adjustable drive pulley on eBay called a ' Congress Drive'
http://www.ebay.com/itm/290686861949?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

All I did was bore it out to .5880" ( just picked a drill bit closest to that size ) on my friends drill press... I opened it up to a small diameter and locked it in place with the set screws on it.... I used the speed knob on the press to adjust the belt tension..... works perfectly !!!!! And these drives are available, rugged, and cheap... $14...... email me with any questions...... Bill

My 2006 polaris sportsman 500 EFI has a torn drive belt. I have removed it, but I would like to know how do I check the clutch and drive pulley to sure me there is nothing wrong, other than the belt...

To check the drive pulley, run your fingers on the inside of the sheaves to check for smoothness. It should be smooth and flat, sometimes the clutches will wear at the inside of the sheaves and there will be a noticeable "hump". Also shine a light on the drive clutch sheaves to check for stress fractures. They will start at the shaft where the belt rides at idle and work their way outwards. Next it is a good idea to check the buttons in your clutch by rotating the clutch forward and backward to make sure it is tight. If there is any play the buttons should be replaced. Also, it depends on whether your Sportsman has EBS or not. If your atv has EBS, there will be a one way bearing where the belt rides. It will spin one way but not the other, and should have little side to side motion. There are washers on either side of that one way bearing that wear and too much side to side motion will actually pinch your belt in places. To get the clutch apart to repair you will have to take it to a Polaris dealer because the clutch is torqued to 200 lb/ft when assembled, and they have the special tools to take it apart. On the driven clutch there isn't much to check. Just make sure the sheaves are smooth. If you need clarification or anything else let me know, Daniel.

We have a champion mastercool evaporative cooler single inlet ASA 71 ordered from Home Depot. I am having a hard time finding a 2 speed 1 hp motor for it HELP!

Hi, I am surprised Home Depot didn't have one as this is a very common motor. I don't know where you are from, but if you look on lone for Grangers supply, or Motion industries, they will have this motor for sure. They both are large suppliers of anything you need in this line of parts. This is a very common motor, totally sealed bearings and body with adjustable sheave, ( pulley ). Please let me know what you find. I will be here to help.

Lgt 2654 runs fine. But when I engage the mower it pulls the engine down alot and when I start to mow it really pulls it down and it hammers. All the pulleys and idlers are free.

Sounds like the mower belt may not be routed correctly around the pulleys or may be running on the wrong side of a belt guard. Also check under the deck to make sure there are no obstructions to the turning of the blade or bent blades....you did not state where the hammering was coming from ( engine or deck ) I can only assume that it is on the deck....so these are the things I would check. Also check the tightness of the bolt on the main pulley sheave (the pulley on the bottom of the engine that drives the belt. the bolt is in the center hole of the pulley) if it is loose it can cause misalignment of the belt and juddering of the deck. If the bolt is tight, remove the belt from the engine pulley sheave and start the engine and look to see that the crankshaft is not bent causing the pulley to wobble....worst case scenario....will require new engine...hope this helps... ;-D

Rototiller engine in a go-kart?

Yes. They are horizontal shaft, and the performance (rpm, power, throttle response) of any horizontal shaft 4-stroke engine is going to be pretty much the same. They also have a governor, which you might want to disable or not, depending on the age of your driver.

Recoil assy won't fit against motor.

suggest as you try to align the pulley to the engine, that you pull the recoil rope a small amount. Many times this will align the mechanisms and allow further installation.

Noisey gearbox

Check the oil level in the gearbox. After that the process will be looking for a probable bad bearing or gear.
