Question about Hayward SAND FILTER, PRO SERIES

1 Answer

Pool filter is not filtering the dirt out of pool.

Already checked the gasket on the vari-flow valve. didn't seem to make a difference. back-washing was also done. will replacing the sand make any difference?

Will replacing the sand make any difference?
Only if you have very dirty sand. -But seeing as you have backwashed it - I would say it will help but not fix prob.

Have you got all pipes in right holes?
Did you put head stock on right way?

How do I check the backwash valve?

Is it a vari-flow valve?
If so with the pump off set the valve to "filter" then you can remove the screws on the top of the valve and remove the assembly. The gasket that usually goes bad is the "spider gasket", it looks like a pie-chart. Check this gasket for any tears or bends in the rubber, if you see any replace it. Turning the valve with the pump running will cause these gaskets to go out

S210 discharge problem

If it is a vari-flow valve, this usually implies a bad gasket. With the valve set to "filter" and the pump OFF you can remove the screws on the top of the valve to check the gasket. It looks like a pie-chart, and usually called a "spider gasket". Check the gasket for tears or warps in the rubber, if you find any replace the gasket. A bad gasket will cause water to flow into different pipes. Turning the valve while the pump is running will cause these gaskets to fail

Dirt passing through the filter

There is no oring from the lateral stand pipe where it plugs into the bottom of the multiport valve.

There is a gasket in the internal valve, commonly called a Spider gasket. Change that.

I changed my sand in the filter last month, when I opened up the pool it was full of green algae, the filter is working but I haven't had to backflush since 2 days ago. The water is still extremely cloudy...

If the water is beginning to clear up, it doesn't sound like you have done anything wrong. You might just need to let your pool filter keep working. I would
a) make sure that your pH, chlorine, and alkalinity levels are correct. An inproper balance of chemicals might be causing the cloudyness.
b) Be sure Vari-Flo valve is set on “Filter” position.
c) Operate filter for longer periods.
d) Make sure that the flow rate through filter is sufficient.
e) Continue to backwash frequently.
Try this for a few days and let us know if you still don't notice a change.

How to open pool, fill sand filter with water?

I happen to have a copy of the users manual for this pool filter. These are the instructions for operating your filter.

1. Be sure correct amount of filter sand media is in tank and
that all connections have been made and are secure.
2. Depress Vari-Flo control valve handle and rotate to
BACKWASH* position. (To prevent damage to control valve
seal, always depress handle before turning.)
3. Prime and start pump according to pump instructions (be
sure all suction and return lines are open), allowing the filter
tank to fill with water.
WARNING: ALL SUCTION AND
DISCHARGE VALVES MUST BE OPEN WHEN
STARTING THE SYSTEM. FAILURE TO DO
SO COULD CAUSE SEVERE PERSONAL
INJURY.
Once water flow is steady out the waste line, run the pump for
at least 2 minutes. The initial back-washing of the filter is
recommended to remove any impurities or fine sand particles
in the sand media.
4. Turn pump off and set valve to RINSE position. Start pump
and operate until water in sight glass is clear—about 1/2 to 1
minute. Turn pump off, set valve to FILTER position and
restart pump. Your filter is now operating in the normal filter
mode, filtering particles from the pool water.
5. Adjust pool suction and return valves to achieve desired
flow. Check system and filter for water leaks and tighten
connections, bolts, nuts, as required.
6. Note the initial pressure gauge reading when the filter is
clean. (It will vary from pool to pool depending upon the
pump and general piping system). As the filter removes dirt
and impurities from the pool water, the accumulation in the
filter will cause the pressure to rise and flow to diminish.
When the pressure gauge reading is 8-10 PSI (0.55-0.69
BAR) higher than the initial "clean" pressure you noted, it is
time to backwash (clean) the filter (see BACKWASH under
Filter Control Valve Functions.)

De powder coming back into pool water from filter

make sure your grids are properly seated and if you have a multiport valve, take it apart and make certain your spider gasket is in place and not distorted. That is the only other reason DE would return into the pool. If you have a slide valve, make sure your o-rings inside are in good condition and properly lubed.

Vari flow is on filter but dirt is passing into pool.

You can replace the spring inside if it is too loose, however you are unlikely to see damage on laterals. It only take a couple thousanths of an inch wear for them to allow sand and/or dirt past.
