Question about Arris SURFboard SB5101 Cable Modem

No connectivity; constant blinking LED lights "Receive" and "Send"

I'm having trouble with my Motorola SURFboard SB5101. The "Receive" and "Send" LED lights constantly blink, hence no connectivity. I've unplugged and re-plugged countless times hoping to reset it, but to no avail. And I cannot locate a "reset" button on the unit. Any advice?

Or you didn't pay your subscription on time and the ISP disabled your cable modem to send user traffic over the cable network. When both Send and Receive lights are blinking that is a visual aid that the modem is working fine, but the ISP disabled its access to the network (unpaid bill, legal issues, etc.)

The modem is being forced to update the Firmware by your cable company, and the modem refuses to... Call your ISP and they can stop it form forcing the update...

I bought a used Motorola SURFboard SB5101 on Amazon and experienced the same problem with the "Receive" and "Send" LED lights constantly blinking. Called my ISP who told me they needed to "re-provision" the equipment. After providing them the HFC Mac ID on the bottom of the modem, I was online!

Receive and send lights keep flashing and no connection can be obtained


Reset the modem by removing the power for at least 45 seconds,try to get online.
If you have a router, reset that also. Modem first, then router,in sequence.

Check the cable going to the modem for any cuts or connector is loose.

If it still won't work ,replace the cable.

Lastly, call your Internet provider.

My motorola SURFboard SB5101 has a on power light, a blinking recieve light, and an on PC/Activity light, with the other lights off. what is wrong with it?


The light pattern you have described indicates that the modem can not establish a connection to your internet service provider (ISP). This is typically do to a signal related issue. To trouble shoot the problem you will need to connect the modem directly to the main cable line where it first enters into the home. You will know when the modem establishes a connection by the top 4 lights becoming green. If at any point all 4 top green lights start to blink in sequence than you will need to contact your internet service provider to "unwall the modem". Remember most internet service providers require you to register your modem on there network. So if you have not all ready completed that process you will most likely not have access.

My motorola SB5101 cable modem is connected properly. The power light is green but the receive light is keep on blinking other lights was turn off (send, etc.). Does my modem has a problem?

You will know when the modem establishes a connection by the top 4 lights becoming solid green. If at any point all 4 top green lights start to blink in sequence than you will need to contact your internet service provider to "unwall the modem". Remember most internet service providers require you to register new modems on there network. So if you have not all ready completed that process you will most likely not have access. If you can not get a connection from the main line than there is a issue with either the modem or the signal coming into the home and you will need to contact your internet service provider.

My Motorola sb5101 won't come online how do I troubleshoot this? My cable connection is fine. When the modem boots up the green power light comes on and stays on followed by the receive light and the send...


These modems are very tricky. When this type modem goes into stand by modem that indicates that you do have a connection to your internet service provider. The reason you cant get online is because all internet access is disabled wile the modem is in standby. If you look closely there is a button located on the top of the modem. This is the stand by button. If you hit that button it should take the modem out of stand by mode and reestablish your connection to the internet.

Keeps flashing Receive light but not connected


when the receive light blinks it means its either receiving or attempting to receive a signal. If its not connected with the ethernet cord then its trying to receive and find the signal from your ISP (internet service provider).

Motorola cable modem sb5101 the receive light blink an the same as the send light


If you are able to access the internet this is a normal operating status. These lights are just letting you know there is activity present with the modem and the modem is sending and receiving information with your provider.

My Motorola Sb5101 modem will not let me access the internet, the send light constantly flashes and i can't attain any internet connection.


If you have the following lights :
Power light - on
Receive light - flashing
Send light - flashing
Online light - off
PC/Activity - on
Standby - off
Then your Network Access is OFF - modem is successfuly registered but Network Access Control is disabled via DOCSIS configuration file.

Call your internet service provider....
