Unit was purchased about 1 year ago. Password protected. When I turn the unit on, and attempt to login with my password, the touch screen is totally unresponsive and just beeps or does nothing at all. At first, it would respond with ****astericks on the data line when I touched the screen with the stylus on the far left side of the touchscreen. Almost as if the touchscreen's 'touch' area shifted to the far left side off from the number pad entry. The touchscreen is also unresponsive to graffiti entry and typewriter entry.
If still is failing, then the digitizer is defective and needs to be replaced.
You can find digitizer parts in ebay or other on-line companies, at reasonable prices.
Regarding the labor cost, depending of the repair shop you choose, it may be cheap or expensive.
Also, if you have minimum experience and skills in fixing electronics, you can try it. really is not so difficult, and minimum set of tools are needed for it

Palm one is in trouble because of problems like this. They don't work on it but you can buy parts to try it yourself. I never had the problem myself but similar conditions. I do windows based units now.
Your gonna find that with the exception of the battery, all else should be left to the factory if nothing else but for factory warrantees. Your probably putting static electricity into the unit and they don't like that.
The palm in question was purchased in 2005. It was exposed to rain just before it started the problem. The sales people at Staples (where I purchased the product ) said the battery usually lasts approx. 4 years. So I decided to buy a replacment one, With a Alluninum case to help to protect it from weather conditions.
I have purchased 2ea. of the handhelds over time, and used them since 2005. They are reliable. I would recommend you purchase a Aluminum case to protect it.
