SOURCE: My Hitachi XL1000 is not showing up in my

d_r_bigman19

If the drive is not showing up there could be a couple of issues with that. The first thing to check is to make sure you just do not need to assign a drive letter to the drive. The links below will help you do this.

How to change your drive letter in Windows Vista and Windows 7

How to change your drive letter in Windows XP

Note if you are asked to intialize the drive and the drive is not new do not do this as you will lose your data on the drive. One of 2 things happened is the master boot record (MBR) got corrupted or the drive is failing. If you have data on the drive I would recommend that you run a recovery program to recover the data.

Another thing to check if you are installing the drive for the first time is to verify in the BIOS that the SATA port that you are trying to us is enabled. There is a chance that it is disabled in the BIOS. Just the other day I was working on an old OEM computer where the secondard SATA port was disabled.

Hope this helps out. Let me know if you have any more problems or questions.

SOURCE: my hitachi 1tb xl1000 drive

It means that there is no operating system installed on your hard drive and so it will not work until you add one. Buy a windows xp disk or an operating system that you wish to use and put the disk in the cd/dvd rom. Reboot the pc to get it to pick up on the disk in the drive and then follow the prompts to install an operating system.

You can recover data from hard drive with data recovery software. Then format the drive toget it fixed.
For data recovery program, here are two of the best Iused.

For Windows: http://www.any-data-recovery.com/index.htm

You can download one of them and scan your hard drive for free to previewwhether your files can be recovered. They will show you the file name, type, dateand of your files and thumbnails for your pictures that it found on yourdrive.

My hitachi xl1000 fell over and now it's making a clicking sound and not being recognized by my Imac

Unfortunately, if the drive falls it can damage a drive, if it is running it can be very bad. The clicking sound you hear is the drive heads clicking against the platter. Your drive will need to be replaced.
