my guess is that you have a crack or a hole in one of your fuel lines. this is very common in chainsaws and weed eaters because they are used very little and sit for a long time. try checking this and repair if necessary. let me know if this works.

SOURCE: lawnmower wont start

If this unit is very old, it probably does have points. But most are electronic. However, even if it does have points, the points is not the problem here. If the points can fire the primer and run until it dies, then i suspect you have a carb problem. If it lacks either compression, spark or gas you'll certainly will have an issue. I don't think you have a compression or a spark problem. Like i said, if it fires up to burn the priming then again i'd suspect the carburetor. Sounds like the center jet in the center leg of the carburetor internally may have a little dirt or such in it.
Hope this helps.
Good luck

This is a timing issue or a valve seat issue. Most likely timing because you overhauled it. Check the mechanical and ignition timing.

Mixer to ritch

most likely one for low speed and one for high speed. Run the mower at high speed and turn the one with the spring 1/8 turn in at a time. Remember where it is now. Turn it in until the engine start to run rough then open it 1/4 of a turn. If that screw is not doing much, put it back where it was to start with and do the same thing with the other one. If neither one does anything, put the throttle to low speed and try it all again. If nothing happens at either speed, you have a definite carburetor problem. In general, if the smoke has a blue tint to it, its usually burning oil. If the smoke is just plain black, its usually a gas problem. I hope this helps. Its kind of tough without being there.

I have a Murray select 22" push lawnmower. It has a 6.o HP Briggs&Stratton Quantum engine. I cannot get it to start or stay running. I have drained the fuel tank of any fuel that was in it and...

You said you drained the fuel tank so I'm assuming that there was fuel left there over the winter when it was not being used. If fuel is left in the lawnmower for a few months without it being used it can form a gel in the jets and/or the diaphram of the carburettor. I would think that this is the problem.

Depending on how bad the problem is you may be able to solve it yourself. Remove the sparkplug and pour around 5ml (one teaspoonful) of fuel into the opening. Dip the end of the sparkplug in fuel, so the spark gap is wet, and replace the plug. Try starting the lawnmower. The fuel you poured in should ignite and the engine turn over. This could **** the fuel through the carburettor and be enough to get it going. You may have to repeat the process 2 or 3 times. Don't be tempted to pour in more than the 5 ml of fuel or you'll flood the engine.

If this fails you'll need to take it to a mechanic to strip down the carburettor. I hope this helps.

take the carby in for overhaul and new diaphragm kit fitted
the main diaphragm is hard and not sealing on the holes so it is not pumping fuel
40: 1 or 50: 1 is alright and the gap is .020-.025"

why I say that is that stihl use an oil that mixes as 50:1 but it is suitable for the full range of ratios in the stihl range of engines
makes no difference what brand of engine , the ratio is to ensure enough oil to lubricate the bearings and cylinders

There is a little white ring that goes over the line and into the opening on the tank. This is what seals the line so the gas won't leak out. They are about $1.00 at any small engine service shop.
