I have a Briggs 5.5 hp with no spark. I changed the coil, diconected the kill wire, tried a working coil from another engine and still no spark. It is on a Yard Machine tiller with all engine controls on the engine itself. I'm puzzled! Dan

THis is on a Yard Machine tiller with pull start

  • lowridr273 May 17, 2009

Sorry but I don't understand? What is main pulley slips?

  • lowridr273 May 17, 2009

This has a recoil starter with the pawls driving it from inside of the cup on the flywheel

Shut off wire is disconnected and this is a non-point system. I believe it is a magnatron.

  • lowridr273 May 17, 2009

Flywheel magnet is strong, it holds a large screwdriver outright.

  • lowridr273 May 17, 2009

Did all of the above. Set the gap at .013. This one's got me stumped!

  • lowridr273 May 17, 2009

I've tried all of the above and still no spark. I bought this used and the original owner said it was always hard to start. Is it possible it has the wrong flywheel? THis machine cannot have 5 hours on it. The tines still have the paint on them!

  • lowridr273 May 17, 2009

This has a magnatron system with no points so there is nothing under the flywheel. Been there checked that. I disconected the kill wire, actually took it right off! Still nothing. Could the flywheel be wrong from the factory?

Disconnect the ground wire from the ignition module(magneto). That is about the only thing that will cause no spark. I use an in line spark tester from harbor freight $1.49. A lot easier than trying to ground the plug on the engine and watching for the spark. But yes, you should be able to see the spark easily like in the garage during the day. If there are wires coming from under the flywheel to the coil it may have points. --------------------------------------- Yes the coil IS under the recoil housing and then, under the flywheel.  The flywheel bore is tapered and mates with the tapered crankshaft. The keyway in the flywheel and shaft
keeps it from spinning on the shaft.  A nut secures it.  Use an impact wrench on the nut and/or a ******** the flywheel.  Don't put force on the cooling fins or they will break.  The recommended way to remove a flywheel is to use a puller.   An alternative, is to tap on the crankshaft top, with a brass hammer or use a punch tip on an air
hammer.   The flywheel will need to be held up and supported or upward pressure applied with 2 large prybars. (A 2 person job.) Care is needed so the flywheel doesn't crack or bend.  Also be careful to not mushroom over
the crankshaft top.  Do the coil replacement work. Replace the key.  Install the flywheel after cleaning the tapers and re-tighten the nut to 65 ft/lbs.

There is also the possibility of a bent or twisted crankshaft depending on the severity of the impact but usually the key just shears.

------------------------ that your engine may well have contact breaker points that cause the coil to induce a current - they are hidden beneath the flywheel in a round aluminium container. As the flywheel rotates the CB points open and close and its important that the gap, when they are open, is set to 15 thou.
------------- The coil has one thick wire that goes to the spark plug, and one much thinner one that is used to stop the engine when it is connected to ground - just make sure that this isn't happening when you try to start up.
please do rate the solution.keep updated, thank you for using fixya.thanks.

yes it can be possible that the wrong flywheel is been connected in the unit.as it has the connections.
if missing in yours then its definately wrongh flywheel from factory.
    thanks.keepupdated.

Hi,
easiest way is to remove shutoff wire from coil and then see if you have spark - if this is a point system it prob needs points and condenser.

Thanks

    Hi,

Disconnect the ground wire from the ignition module(magneto). That is about the only thing that will cause no spark.

Also check the coil to flywheel gap and clean both surfaces of rust.

    Thanks

Vanguard Briggs & Stratton won't shut down

Your kill wire from the switch to the coil is bad, disconnected or connections dirty...or switch is bad...try disconnecting the kill wire on the coil and using a jumper ground the coil directly to the engine or frame it should shut down if it does it is the wire or switch do the same at the switch if it shuts down it is the switch..if not the wire has a break..good luck..

I HAVE NO SPARK ON MY BRIGGS AND STRATON MOTOR

Try this locate your coil / magneto and disconnect the kill "shut off wire " and try to start if it starts your switch may be bad or wire broken..if still no spark using a rubber handled pliers ...Pull your plug wire and place a screwdriver or similar metal piece and in the plug wire now bring the screw driver close to the engine block or Frame if spark it is your plug..if not your coil needs replaced...not a hard job just use a business card to set clearance on your coil..good luck

I changed the coil, gas and spark plug it still will only turn over and not start what else could it be?

if it has a solinoid which has two wires going to the bottom of the carburator two things you should try one take yhe aie filter off and spray some starter fluid in the carburator it should start but just long enough to run out the starting fluid or next take off the starter cover and take off the small wire off the coil that is called the kill switch it should fire if the engine is turning over you just wont be able to shut it off but you will find out that it is the kill switch
