Help Adding a 2nd Monitor to ALL-IN-ONE

Try using a VGA to VGA cable or a dvi to dvi cable because dvi-d and hdmi tend to lack the necessary pins to be converted to an analogue signal. A hdmi to dvi cable may also work

I need to connect a VGA dell monitor my Toshiba Laptop

HDMI is digital
VGA (the 15 pin connector) is analog.
If your connector has the digital to analog interface it should work, but likely it does not have that chip and thus will not work.

Your description of the problem tells me it may never work as you have it connected. Possibly it might be that the monitor is required to be powered on before the laptop is booted, but that only works in some cases.

I have also seen some work if a 2-step connector is used.
VGA to DVI connector, followed by DVI to HDMI connector.
DVI was the step toward digital that came before the HDMI standard was implemented and was only partially digital. DVI and VGA do not carry control signals nor audio. HDMI carries both those as well as the video.

YMMV but I think it would be cheaper and more efficient to actually purchase a monitor with a digital input (HDMI or DVI).
Without the digital/analog converter interface a digital output device (your laptop with HDMI out) can never operate an analog device (your Dell monitor with VGA input).

You need an adapter and the bestis to approach the nearest computer accessories store where such ones are available to which the conversion cord you bought can be used.

Bought the belkin vga audio video cable to hook up my pc to my sony 52" lcd tv but the connecion in back of the tv is much bigger than the vga. is there others way of making it work?

It is possible that the connection behind your tv is DVI.
Do you have a DVI out from your video card on your pc? It would look like the same port from the back of your TV. If you have HDMI or DVI out from your pc you can interconnect to an HDMI or DVI to the back of you tv. All of the adapters and cables exist. The only thing you can't (yes you can but too expensive and impractical and rare) to do is to go from VGA to HDMI / DVI. You can go from HDMI / DVI to VGA but not the other way around.

Hope this helps.

Hi I recently bought a Biostar A880G+ motherboard which supports VGA, HDMI and DVI video outputs. I cannot get a second monitor to run on this board. The only output wich seems active is the VGA?

The manual says

  • NOTE: The HDMI and DVI-D ports both can provide digital video signals output function, but these two interfaces cannot work at the same time. The chipset uses the same channel to control HDMI and DVI-D, so these ports cannot transmit video signal to different display panels simultaneously.

so you should be able to use one of them as well as the VGA. Maybe you need to change something in the BIOS settings? I don't have this motherboard myself, just found the manual online at

I have a Samsung Series 6-650 LCD TV (Model # LN46A650A1F). I am trying to connect my Laptop to use the TV as a monitor and have done everything to make it work, using a VGA/HDMI cable, but the TV refuses...

Why do you use VGA-HDMI cable? This TV works fine with VGA cable - it has VGA plug.
Or if your notebook has DVI output, then you can use DVI/HDMI cable and connect it to the TV to plug named DVI/HDMI (only one HDMI input is marked as DVI on TV).
I suppose that over HDMI the TV supports only some standard resolutions, but over VGA it supports almost every resolution laptops use. You can find supported resolutions for each input in the TV manual. Try setting the same resolution on the laptop.

What kind of connector do I use to connect a dell laptop to a Hitachi 42'' plasma display? HDMI to DVI or HDMI to VGA?

If the TV has a VGA connector then use a VGA to VGA cable from your laptop as most laptops have a VGA output. Otherwise use one of the other combinations that work HDMI to DVI or HDMI to HDMI..

What do I need to hook it up to an hdtv...what type of cables..DVI-D to HDMI?

Your laptop will need a HDMI output or a DVI output for HD video. If your laptop only has a VGA out the your tv will need a VGA or DVI input. You could use a vga to dvi adapter if your tv does not have a vga connector. They do have a DVI to HDMI adapter but there are a couple of problems with that. One you will not get the sound and the TV will only obtain sound from HDMI cable when connected that way and Two the TV will have problems processing the signal from the computer due to the HDMI will only process the HD signals at certain formats and the computer video can send out many different signals. I tried and I could not get my tv to process the signal so I got a video card that has a HDMI out and my blu-ray player works great.

I am trying to use my 32 inch Insignia HDTV as the display for my 13 inch macbook. I got an adapter for the vga, connected everything and turned then on. The display only shows one of my desktop pictures...

--==<[ DVI to VGA vs. DVI to HDMI ]>==-- Caleb, what you really want to do to get your Macbook working with the Insignia HDTV is to >RETURN< and exchange the DVI to VGA adapter for a DVI to HDMI adapter. This is assuming your hdtv has HDMI inputs (which I'm pretty sure all the insignia ones do! I own a 1080p 32" Insignia HDTV and it has 4 HDMI's). The reason you should exchange them is that DVI and HDMI are essentially the same connector (and a better connection than VGA), the only difference between DVI and HDMI is that HDMI additionaly contains two audio channel wires. HDMI (which is a smaller version of DVI) is a digital signal and will give you perfect picture quality compared to the analog 'pc vga' type connector you were converting it to with the adapter you described (not to mention it will probably just work immediately since there is intelligent 'handshaking' that goes on with an HDMI connection, so it will tell your HDTV what resolution to use rather than it having to guess....)
I am guessing by now you solved the problem since it was in June that you posted and it's now November as I write this, but I figured you're probably not the only one who tried hooking it up that way. And most people don't seem to realize that DVI and HDMI are essentially the same type of connection, just smaller, with audio added. So someone will most likely benefit from this posting =)
