What is a normal scenario for a transmission to go bad? Is it possible for the machine to spin while it adgetates? could a transmission cause a slow spin? how?

thanks that helps me out a lot. i still have another question i have had several problems with maytag washer that will fill not agitate but spin and drain the only thing that i can think of is it is the pressure switch. i installed a new swicht and this did not solve the problem. i replaced the timer and this also did not solve the problem. any ideas?

My 40-year old Maytag would appear to work perfectly with a couple of pounds of clothes, but with a moderate or full load, the spin never gets up to full speed on "Normal Wash" or "Wash & Wear". (BTW, I can tell the distinction still works.)

The advice for the other problem mentions a slipping clutch. Can you tell more about that and also detail tests for the brake, thrust bearing etc.? Could the belt be slipping? Are there going to be parts, so diagnosis will not waste my time? I vaguely remeber replacing some neoprene balls or some such that allow the motor to move and maintain belt tension? Is that a possibility again aftern a dozen years or more?

If you have the topload maytag as listed, It is possible for a transmission to have both symptoms, but it doesn't usually happen as you describe. If something came apart inside the clutch causing the shaft to pull up and keep the brake released, but also allowed the clutch to slip, this is possible.

I would suspect a brake or thrust bearing or both before a transmission. If you are able to turn the basket easily by hand, the brake is not applying for some reason. The thrust bearing will wear down so that it doesn't completely release the brake causing a slow spin. I find these two parts to cause more trouble than transmissions, but I do find bad transmissions occasionaly also.  Post back if you want to know how to check them.

How to adjust new belt on maytag washing

sounds like you have a bad transmission. can you lift the top up so you can see what it is doing when it is trying to spin. does it adgetate and spin at the same time? If yes you have a bad transmission. also if you get 2 people one looking inside of the drum and the other turning the big pulley in one direction it should turn the whole drum in the other the agetator should go back and forth. Tell me what happens thanks.

When my washer goes into the spin cycle, it vibrates horribly.

sounds like you have a transmission problem. yes, i said transmission. washers have a centrifical gearing system which acts like a transmission. what you describe sounds like a bad bearing. definately a job for the repairman. good luck

Maytag coin-op top load wont spin, motor runs, belt burns.

it not a belt, there is a $20 plastic and rubber coupling between the motor and the transmission that has broken.  It needs replacing.

Maytag washer. Model PAV1000AWW: It won't spin. Agitates OK. Water pumps out OK. Just won't spin. Makes no unusual noise. Bad transmission?

If the motor is spinning fast, but the tub is not spinning, then it is the transmission. If the motor is not spinning, then the high speed windings of the motor are shot and it needs a new motor.

Agitator problems

sounds as if the transmission agitator pawl is slipping. inside the transmission is a gear connected to the agitator. there is a spring loaded pawl that rotates around the center and engages its pawl or hook into the agitator gear for each rotation. either the pawl hook is worn or the agitator gear is rounded off. the transmission must be opened up to see what is a miss

MAYTAG Wahing machine model MAV6000AWQ

I believe your machine is equipped with a "snubber plate" under the transmission. A lot of Maytag top-loaders are. This is a white teflon ring that is used as the wash tub and transmission support and assists in dampening vibrations during the spin cycles. It's located on the inside case of the machine under your transmission. When the snubber goes bad they generally start to squeak. They cannot be lubricated and must be replaced. If you try to oil them, they will eventually disintegrate. The snubber costs less than $10 to purchase. I hope this helps.

Noisy spin cycle

Hey ****, what you are hearing is the spin bearing. Maytag redesigned the bearing kit on this washer, there must of been a lot of leaks causing the bearing to go bad. They put out a service flash...TDL-0060-B. New seal and bearing kit, part number12002470. You may want to contact Maytag on this for it could be covered. I know you have 5 years warranty on the transmission and If they change that, they have to use a new seal and bearing. back.
