Hi, I have a 1997 Ford Explorer, w/ 4.0 SOHC Motor. While my truck is in great condition and purr's like a kitten, I have an issue with how the AC works. This just started about a week or so ago. The problem is that I turn the knob to AC Normal and warm air will come out and no compressor kicks on. I turn it to AC Max and really COLD air come as it should, compressor kicks on. and it I turn the knob to one of the spots on the Heater/Defrost side, and I can get AC like air coming out, and the compressor kicks. Is this my dash control switch just going bad?
More than likely. You said you get really cold air on high and no air but the blower motor on low.
You can just use high or try a local junk yard, it is a '97 so there should be a few there or you can go back to the dealer. From what I have heard FORD has stopped making a lot of parts for the older explorers ('95 body style). I havn't heard anything on your body style or newer not being available. Try pulling out the head unit and cleaning all the contacts and see if that works. Good luck.
Below, I've pasted instructions for the Control Cable adjustment.
Function Selector And Temperature Selector Control Cable
To check the temperature cable adjustment, move the temperature control lever all the way to the left, then move it all the way to the right. At the extreme ends of lever travel, the door should be heard to firmly seat, indicated by a loud thumping sound, allowing either maximum or no air flow through the heater core. To check the function cable adjustment, see that the function lever will reach the detents at the far left and right of its travel. In addition, check that the air flow is correct when the function lever is moved through each detent provided in the control assembly. If cable adjustment is needed, proceed as follows:
The adjustable end should remain attached to the door cams.
Should the Control Cable turn out fine, then it's most likely to be the Blower Motor Resistor. It's a common Ford issue where some fan speeds fail in Ford's climate control but others work. In your case, it appears the lower speed is failing.
An illustration of the Blower Motor Resistor is linked to below.

Best of luck with your problem!

Just to clarify, my Blower blows fine on any speed. just low AC blows warm air (even when selector is on cold side), MAX ac blows really COLD air.
Gonna try out solution 2 today, I will comment back later.
