Question about Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP3 Full Version OEM for PC

1 Answer

My system is a desktop Asus with a Crosshair motherboard and AMD Athlon 64 FX-62, 2800 MHz: nVIDIA nForce 590 SLI with Socket AM2 and 4GB Dual DDR2 SDRAM. All the drivers are up to date and all the Microsoft patches for SP2 have been installed. Before first trying to install SP3 I took the steps prescribed by Microsoft and used their tool to check system was SP3 compatible. It reported that the Computer was ready to accept SP3. I then did the install offered by Microsoft Update after first disabling my Antivirus. The installation appeared to be successful. But after a reboot the system hung at the first Windows screen. I rebooted in Safe Mode plus networking which was successful and all devices seemed to be OK. I restored the SP 2 system from a backup image and installed SP3 from the Microsoft CD in Normal Mode but the result was exactly the same. I accessed the Microsoft SP3 help chat for help but the technician could not solve the problem. Do you think I have missed something that I could do to install SP3, Would it be worth installing SP3 offline from the Microsoft SP3 CD in safe mode or is better to stop spending time on SP3?

Thanks for your message. I have installed SP3 in Safe Mode. The installation completed successfully with no error messages but on rebooting I could only access windows in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking. Normal Mode and VGA mode would boot but hung at the first Windows screen (chucking bricks) with the disk LED flashing continuously at about 2 second intervals.

It is frustrating that SP3 WILL work in Safe Mode including read Optical disks and print to the default printer a correct test page and BUT I cannot detect what is stopping Normal Mode from loading. If there is no way of doing this staying with SP2 sounds best particularly as you say it will still be updated correctly by Windows Update.

While I could make a new install of XP + SP3 from the slip-streamed XP Pro+SP3 CD I have made ( I have tested that it is valid by installing it on my backup disk), install all the applications and restore all the data and settings looks like a whole day's work I guess you advise its not worth it?

Thanks, I had about reached the same conclusion and your comment is very helpful. I will not bother anymore with SP3.

Evidently one of the updates in SP3 is having a compatibility problem with one of the software or drivers installed.

Installing SP3 from CD or from the online download does not make a big difference, both the setup will install the same updates in the same succession.

You can try reinstalling SP3 from safe mode, it will be successfull only if the problem was a running process that could not be shut down during upgrade (many processes are not started in safe mode).

If SP3 still does not install, then you will need to reinstall a fresh version of Windows, then upgrade to SP3 and install the rest of the software afterward.

At that point, if the system is running OK with SP2 and the rest of the updates installed, I suggest keeping SP2 rather than reinstalling the System. Most of the updates contained in SP3 are currently being distributed and installed using Microsoft Automatic Update.

Regards.

If you can only access windows in Safe Mode, that is because in safe mode many system task are not automatically started, and the process that is in conflict with SP3 is not running in safe mode.

finding what process is in conflict with SP3 is very difficult, if not impossible, and using a registry cleaner or similar program risks to make things worse.

Regarding a new system installation , that will take 3 or 4 hours, and will wipe out all your old software, as you will need a new installation, possibly formatting the Hard disk, rather than doing an upgrade installation that will not work. The system should work on SP3 after doing a fresh Windows setup with SP3.
If it is worth or not depends on your time, and on the problems caused by deleting all software and settings.
If you really want SP3, and you do not mind formatting HD and installing a fresh Windows, a fresh setup may still be worth.
Ensure that you have all drivers and all the software for your computer first, if you do not have motherboard original driver disk , then take a screenshot of device manager with rows expanded , so to have a list or installed devices, or ensure that you already downloaded all drivers for your system.
