External harddrives like this one are not by any means designed to make your computer faster, they are simply extra storage space you can use either to store more stuff, or to keep a backup copy of the important things you don't want to lose if your computer every dies.

These drives in essence are like adding an extra file cabinet to the office.

If you want to make your computer faster reply back here with Make & Model if it's a brand name, if it's a custom tower then reply back with CPU, RAM, Motherboard Make and Model for each and I will do my best to give you some pointers.

My pc does not recognise my maxtor hard drive

try removing everything in device manager's USB section, ALL, & delete drivers, then reboot, now try again, often this fixes things. You may be asked for drivers gain, if you do, show the installer where they are.

Want to format for pc

Since you want to format it, let's blow away the partition:

1. Right-click [My Computer]
2. [Manage]
3. Disk Management]
4. Find your Maxtor in the list or graph.
5. Once you are certain, then right-click the Maxtor entry (or graph) and select "Delete Partition"
6. Answer [Yes] to the next scary question.
7. If it has other partitions, you may want to examine them and delete them later.
8. You can now "New Partition" (right-click)
9. The create a "Primary" drive and format it.
*done*

Can't detect an external Hard drive (Maxtor 1TB)

im going to assume your on XP for these instructions. other wise you still need to do the same thing.

right click the my computer desktop or the start menu. go down to properties. open the hardware tab. open the device manager. Scroll down to it, remove the driver, just delete the whole entry. unplug the hard drive, then plug it in again. See if that works.

hope this will fixya....

My maxtor 750GB external drive is not recognized by my CPU anymore!

It's probably either WinXP and a hub fighting over drive IDs, special drivers you installed but haven't been upgrading, or the thing isn't powered up properly.  Go to.  Oh, and your CPU (Intel, ARM, AMD, whatever) never recognizes hard drives; it's up to the OS.  What OS?  That's how you present a problem properly, in the right category.

Hi, I'm backing up the contents of my Powerbook G4 (mac - purchased in '05) on the Maxtor One Touch III external HD. It's been going for a day and a half now. Admittedly the computer is nearly full of...

use your task manager to see if it is actually doing anything.Right click the task bar and select task manager,,,at the bottom of the task manager it will tell you how much CPU,Memory, and how many processes are running. You can look at the processes and see exactly which ones are using the CPU.Another way to get to the task manager is control+alt+delete click in that order and continue holding down each key untill you have pressed all the keys, then release all three at the same time.

Need to format

Hi, You can try: 1. Open your "My Computer" and determine which of your HDs is the Maxtor III, say "E" or "F"; 2. Right click on the Maxtor III; 3. Click on "Format"; 4. On the File System, select FAT 32; 5. Click on "Start" Of course formatting your HD will delete its content. Alternately, you can: a. Open a command prompt window (type "cmd" in "Run"; b. type "format E: /fs:FAT32" assuming your PC assigned the drive letter "E" to the Maxtor III; c. hit "Enter" If for some reason this will not work, you may have to likewise delete the partition first. A handy 3rd party utility for the partition/format of a hard disk is Partition Magic. Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things turns out or should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.
