You would need to ensure if its onboard sound that the jumper on the motherboard is set correctly so its enabled there ( if it uses a jumper ) and also in the bios / cmos to ensure its enabled in there.

If its enabled in there then it will just be a case of ensuring your audio drivers are up to date in windows for your sound card and also when you connect the microphone it should be connected to the pink audio hole otherwise if you are recording from a tape then you will require the blue hole

How do I get it to record a voice?

Many portable 'boombox' recorders do not include a microphone for recording ambient sound, but can only record from one internal source to another, like radio or CD to Cassettte. Some do include an input jack for microphones or other audio sources, but you'll need to check your device's specs/ports to be sure.

How to detect microphone in laptop

Hi,

I think it would be better if we check that the built-in microphone is working on your machine.

Internal microphone

The internal microphone is located near the top of the notebook LCD display or near the bottom of the LCD display near the hinge. Use the following best practices to better capture sound with the microphone.

-Adjust the notebook PC screen to place the microphone in the best direction for receiving sound.

-Speak directly into the microphone. Avoid speaking away from the microphone.

-When using the internal microphone, choose an environment without background noise.

Testing the record function on the notebook PC

1. Click Start , then Programs , Accessories , Entertainment , and then Sound Recorder .
2. Click Record (the red dot) and speak into the microphone.
3. When you are finished recording, click Stop (the gray rectangle).
4. To play back the recording, click Play (the gray arrow pointing to the right).

If happens that the recording with the microphone have no sound we have check the settings.

Checking microphone settings

1. Click Start , then Programs , Accessories , Entertainment , and then Volume Control .
2. A Volume Control or Master Volume window opens.
3. Click Options , and then Properties .
4. Select Recording , and make sure Microphone is selected.
5. Click OK . The Volume Control window should change to a Recording Gain Control window.
6. Click Options again and then click Advanced Controls . If Advanced Controls is unavailable, then an alternate microphone is not available. Proceed to the next series of steps.
7. Remove the check next to Alternate microphone , click Close , and test the microphone. If there is still no sound, continue to the next step

Ensuring the correct recording device is selected

1. Access sound properties:

-In Windows XP, to access the sound control panel applet, click Start , then Control Panel . Click Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices , and then click Sounds and Audio Devices .

-In Windows 95, 98, and Me, click Start , Settings , and Control Panel . Double-click Sounds and Multimedia , or Multimedia . The Sounds and Multimedia Properties window opens.

2. Click the Audio tab.

3. Under Sound Playback , select the audio device that is installed on the computer (there should be only one).

4. Under Sound Recording , select the audio device that is installed on the computer. It should be the same as the listing under Sound Playback .

5. Click OK .

6. Close the Sound and Multimedia Properties window and test the recording.

Feel free to reply if happens the steps I've told you is not working. Hope it helps.

I have an OS 10.5 Mac and a Logitech desktop microphone. I want to record and play back voice. What software do I need?

Hello,
Mac come with builtin Sound Recording Service. You need to follow these steps to record sound through your microphone.
  1. Click the Apple menu and select Control Panels; select Monitors & Sound
  2. Click the Sound icon.
  3. Under Sound Monitoring Source, select one of the seven input sources (where the sound will come from): Built-in Mic, External Mic, Sound In, Expansion Bay, CD, Zoomed Video, Internal Modem, RCA In, DAV Analog In, or PC Card. Some systems may not have all choices.
  4. Choose Sound Output Quality: 11.025, 22.050 or 44.100 KHz. Some systems may not have all choices.
  5. Click the Apple menu and select Simple Sound.
  6. Click the File menu and select New. You're presented with a window set up like the controls on a tape recorder.
  7. Click the Record button and start your sound (either speaking or singing into a microphone, or playing your CD, or whatever).
  8. Click the Stop button when you're finished. You can click Play to check what you recorded.
  9. Click Save. You're presented with a Save dialog box in which you can name the sound file and place it in whatever folder you like.
You are done. If SimpleSound isn't in the Apple menu, search for it with Sherlock (press Command-F). To play the new sound file later, just double-click its icon to open SimpleSound.
