How to replace radiant heat element

How do you get to the elements on the GE Profile Cooktop - Model # JP989BK1BB. Does someone have a repair manual with the proper breakdown of replacing the heat element or insructions. I work on appliances but have not had to work on these glass cooktops yet.

HI, on most models, there are three to four screws that hold the top to the cabinet. Look at the flange above the door to locate them. If this is the right nodel, the top should just raise up after the screws are removed. Be very careful not to twist or drop the top after it has been raised.
I hope this helps

you have either a bad switch or a bad element. If you plan on repairing this yourself, turn off the power to the unit BEFORE removing it from countertop. A continuity tester will be needed to properly test components. Nice Saturday morning homeowner project.

Does the radiant heating element cycle on and off?

  • The surface cooking area may glow red when a heating element is ON.
  • Some parts of the surface cooking area may not glow red when a heating element is ON.
  • The warming zone element (on certain models) will not glow red.

I hade a code 153 also. Changed the element(costly-$200) and had to recalibrate the pan sensors(in the manual). All works fine now.
