Laptop just died...power/battery???

Yesterday, while I was just doing normal stuff on my Asus F3-JR laptop it just shutdown instantly. No warning or anything. At the moment, there is no response at all, not even a light to say that the power is plugged in. Although, when the main is plugged in, a very very quiet noise can be heard from it, and it slowly heats up as if it were running. It was plugged in when it turned off and I'm fairly sure it was fully charged, I haven't had battery problems yet. I've read around the net for a solution but nothing has worked so far.
I've taken it apart and cleaned it out a bit (hdd, ram, processor, fan, little round battery, wireless chip), nothing;
I've taken the battery out for a while, nothing;
I've held the power button in for +30 seconds with various hardware setting, still nothing.
I need it working, mainly because I have some important things not backed up, ie: uni assignments that are due soonish. This one has me stumped! I'd rather not send it to a pro, too expensive for me at the moment.
Thanks loads if you can help!!!

Sounds like you have got a serious problem.
Check the adapter with a multimeter, the output voltage should be slightly higher than the voltage that is printed on the label on the adapter, if not then you have got a faulty power adapter and needs to be replaced.
Get the RAM checked out by inserting it into another computer or take it to your friendly computer shop.
Try powering up the laptop without the main battery connected.
If these don't appear to be the problem then from your description it looks like you have got yourself a large paper weight.

If your hard disk is OK and you want to retrieve your data, then remove the hard disk and plug it into an USB hard drive adapter and connect this USB adapter into a working computer's USB port.
If this computer see the adapter and hard drive as an external hard drive and you can view the contents of the hard drive, you can copy your data to what ever storage device you want.
If you use an USB hard drive adapter case then you have got an external USB hard drive.

The rechargeable battery may have a bad cell, how long will the battery last before shutdown? this may give important clue about the condition. Generally if the battery is one to three old or more it is probably time to change it.

My ASUS laptop F8OL always shutdown when temperature rises on top of my keyboard on the left handside but my ASUS NB Probe did not give a warning and itsays Normal, can you help me out

Your laptop shuts itself down to due to overheating. It does this to prevent damage to your components. This may have been caused by one of a combination of the following reasons:

1. Faulty fan.
2. Dust preventing the fan to supply enough air into the board.

Solution: Clean or replace the Fan.

Cleaning the fan isn't a job for the rookies so I suggest you take your laptop to the computer repair shops and have them service it. Unless you know what you're doing. This procedure can damage your laptop entirely.

Hope this helps.

How do I recover from an unexpected shutdown of my laptop?

Most unexpected shutdowns are from thermal signals from the processor or from a memory module failure. Get some cans of compressed air from an office supply store and with all power disconnected and the battery removed, use small bursts of air and blow out all the ventilation frills on the laptop, including all access doors and cd/dvd tray or slot. If it continues after the cleanout, try powering down and removing one memory module and run the laptop. If it dies not shut down, swap out the modules and try again. if it fails, then you know what the problem is.

Advent 6651 notebook turns off

This is a total long shot, but could there be some of the original packaging attached to the battery? The 'brand new' aspect of the laptop made me think about this.

It sounds like your computer is powering directly from the charger, without any of the charge going into the battery. If there was a small plastic cover over the contacts on the battery, it may explain this probem.

Otherwise, I would look towards some other battery issue.

There could be a power saving feature somewhere causing this problem, however there's normally some sort of warning about this, rather than an unexpected and instant shutdown.

Laptop just died...power/battery???

It could be one of 2 things. Dead battery or hard drive is dead. Your biggest problem is you never backed up your info.
