Power Supply possibly blew up

I had bought the WD My Book Essential 500 GB Ext Hard Drive from USA. When I tried using it in UK, I had chosen a 18V power supply by mistake where as the Drive works at 12 V. Within seconds when I found plastic burning smell - I stopped the supply. Later when I tried with the right 12 V supplied adaptor using a covertor plug (US to UK) the hard drive would not start up and the Laptop would not recognise the drive. Is there a way, where I can fix this problem. Since it is a brand new equipment - its sad to see I lost it before I could use this.... please suggest if this is repairable.

I have WD My Book Essential 2 capacity 500 GB. Unfortunately everytime I connect it to the PC and power, does not show as a hard drive and has no driver. I backed up my files on it from the same computer...

you may have a bad drive, but first dose the drive power up not just light up can you hear the drive.
what you have in the box is just a nornal HD in an external box. you can if "absolutely nessesary " remove the HD and put it into your PC as a second drive.
but first you need to know if it is running and if the WD My Book power supple is working.
Have you tried using a different USB cable? a different power supply of the same Voltage & amps.

Broken usb housing on WD 500 gb my book

You should be able to take out the 3.5 drive that is inside and move it to a new enclosure (does not have to be WD) Tiger Direct has them. You can find them at BestBuy or online for less than $40

I think you have burn your power supply coord! Sometime powercoord have the same plug but the voltage are not the same laptop run sometime at 18v when hd is at 12v. On your HD look arround the power coord hole, you should be able to find wich voltage you need to operate it!

Power Supply possibly bleuw up due to overload

Bring it to a PC repair centre, the disk inside the case may be okay and may be able to be read if its removed and put into a PC. Worth a shot.

My drive won't start up

Don't use a power strip or surge protector.... try to connect the power supply adapter directly to a wall socket. Always safely remove hardware after use
