Problem for HP Compaq Presario V2000 PC Notebook

Compaq Presario v2000 w/ dead USB ports

By mindhead1 on Oct 17, 2007

" "
The usb ports on my v2000 no longer work. When I plug in any USB device it is not recognized. Everything else on the machine is working fine (wifi, ethernet, DVD - CDRW, etc.).

I have tried reinstalling the drivers, but that has not worked. Could it be a hardware problem?

Clarification Request

-   I also have a Compaq Presario laptop with three USB ports that worked fine up until yesterday. I don't know of any "event" that might have caused them to all stop working at the same time. I tried the Solution #4, sliding my mouse USB connection in and out of the USB port several times. Nothing. So much for the easy solution. -   mikael327

-   My computer works fine other than when I plug something into the usb ports. It freezes up and won't do anything! -   laketta_neel

-   I have the same problem on a Pavilion DV2000, built in webcam, usb ports and express card reader are all dead. Reinstall the OS, upgrades the BIOS , tried windows updates and finally called HP. They offer to repair it for $280. I dont think the system is worth all that money.

I have a v2555us and one-at-a-time, each usb port just stopped working. When I plug anything into the ports, it tells me the device is not recognized. I actually dealt with no USB ports for about 1.5 years until about 3 weeks ago I got so fed-up that I plugged a mouse in and unplugged it fast about 6 times in a row, and then left it in, and BAM it worked like a charm. I tested it with other devices and tried the other port. The other things worked but the other port didnt work, but I did the same thing for the other USB port and it worked as well. Try just plugging something into the port and unplugging it 6 or so times. Maybe the contacts were dirty, maybe there was some sort of static interference. Who knows.. im glad i have my USB ports back now!

I believe this may be a hardware issue. I've got a laptop here with the same problems at the moment. It's quite rare to see but it sounds like something has shorted out the USB ports on your laptop, and being a laptop the USB ports are all built into the motherboard making it a full replacement job. Hopefully your laptop is still under warranty.

One other thing to check though would be to enter the setup (BIOS) screen when your laptop is booting up. Done by pressing delete or F1 or F2 i can't remember what it is for the compaqs. But from there you should be able to see if the USB ports are enabled or disabled. If they are disabled here at the BIOS then they won't show up at all in windows. If they are set as enabled, then its definately a hardware problem sorry.

I have the same problem with my Compaq Presario V2000. Lost both USB ports and HP tells me that the motherboard has to be replaced at $300 +..I searched and found a PCMCIA card with two USB ports for $10. No problems with the USB ports on this card..great and cheap solution.
My belief is that the compaq usb ports do not have power limiting circuitry therefore allowing you to overload the output power on the ports. My ports failed after I downloaded into a burglar alarm system I was programming.

On some of the older modules they had one usb port with the audio ports on a board which could be replaced, that was near the card reader, the other two usb ports on the other side are built into the motherboard. Sometimes the riser board can be replaced and they cost like $10 depends on the model though.

For amd processors they dont have usb settings in the bios , Intel ones do and they have drivers which can sometimes fix the issue.

Have completely lost one usb port, and have to manipulate the cable in the other port until the device works, in this case a laser mouse which allows me to see the light, and know when I'm connected. I must not move lap top or I lose connection again
