Question about Sony KP-53V90 53" Rear Projection Television

Color issues - Sony KP-53V90 53 in. Projection Television

My parents have a Sony KP-53V90 that has developed some color problems. The overall color seems to be much more yellow than normal and also nowhere near as sharp as it used to be. The TV had really good color and image quality until this problem just happened one day.

Any thoughts/recommendations??

Thanks,

Theo

Your TV most likely has one of two possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

This is probably the notorious "light engine" problem that all of these Sonys of this design run into sooner or later. It is usually more expensive to repair that what the TV is worth, sadly. A Sony authorized repair center can confirm this.

I HAVE A SONY KP-53V90 53 INCH REAR PROJECTION TV AND THE COLORES ARE NOT MERGING TOGETHER PROPERLY I THINK THIS IS CALLED A GHOST IMAGE HOW CAN I FIX THIS

You have a convergence issue, will have to check convergence IC,S or just replace them there are usually two of them mounted on heat sinks they are usually STK'S with a number after. Also must check fuseable resistors supplying +15 and - 15 volt s to the chips. After replacement some convergence alignment may be needed. Good Luck.

I have a Sony KP-53V90 53 with no display and red light flashing

This is a good one. Your TV "looks" at the feedback coming from each picture tube in your TV. When it doesn't see what it expects, it kicks out a 5 flash. Most commonly, the correct signals never got to the picture tube(s) and that's why the feedback was abnormal. Which brings us to the most common solution: C boards, they attach directly to the bottom of the picture tubes. Figuring out which one has a problem... that's another matter. Due to the age of the TV, parts costs are rising. Each C board (3 in the TV) runs about $100 so guess work can be expensive. I hope this was helpful.
