Question about Canon PowerShot A80 Digital Camera

Windows Vista does not recognize Canon PowerShot A80

I recently purchased a laptop computer loaded with Vista. I have downloaded my Canon Powershot A80 software however I get the message "camera not found" when I try to download photos. I am using the same connection previously used on another compter with Windows XP. The usb cord is attached to the compter on one end and the camera on the other. The camera is on, and in the correct mode and I still get the message "camera not found." Any suggestions??

Vista requires updated drivers for most of the older cameras. Unfortunately, Canon chose not to update the drivers for many of these cameras, including the A80. BUT please see the following blog article, as it describes the use of a card reader as a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos. In fact there are several important reasons discussed in the article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue. Just make sure that you get one that's stated capable of reading a CF card:

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

It may be that the camera is out dated so if you go onto the canon website and find a plug in to down load to your computer then you should be able to run it

Windows Vista can't find my camera. This is a new problem as it worked fine last winter. My old computer with Windows XP has no problem. Control Panel - Scanners and cameras shows the Canon A80.

Canon did not update the drivers for many of its older cameras for the Vista OS, the A80 included. In other words, you cannot directly download from the A80 using Vista. Please see the following blog article, as it describes the use of a card reader as an alternative and much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos. In fact there are several important reasons discussed in the article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. Canon A80

reinstall your camera software or check you system information tool. The driver maybe on your system and just needs to be reinstalled. If you don;t have your camera software, you can probably download it from the manufacturer's website.

If nothing else works, try using a usb card reader to get the pictures into the computer's hard drive.
A nice usb card reader is available in all electronics stores such as Best Buy, Walmart, RadioShack, and so on.
