Question about Washing Machines

The machine will fill with water but will not

I have a Whirlpool washer model LSC9000PW2, The machine will fill with water but will not agitate or spin. The lid switch appears to be intact. Can it have failed and appear perfectly normal? If it is not the lid switch is there another likley electronic component that would shut off power to the motor?

The motor will not run at all with the lid open or closed. The more I think about it the more I think it is the lid switch. The machine will fill with water in any and all wash cycles but will not progress beyond that point.

I did tilt the washer back to take a look underneath. A couple of days ago my daughter washed her bathroom rug in the machine and it unraveled. I thought maybe the pump had become clogged with the debris, shetting down the machine.

While there was no sign of debris in the pump, I did note that it does not turn freely. Should I be able to turn the pump without applying all but minimal pressure? I think this part may be failing too.

Hi, If you have the washer in spin cycle, does the motor run? If the motor runs and you lift the lid, the motor should shut off. It sounds to me like you might have a coupler bad. It conects the motor to the transmission. It is a common problem.
Let me know if I cam assist you further.

Thanks

It probably has something in it too but, the notor should try and run. I feel like you do, the lid switch is suspect. If you remove the two screws that hold the control panel to the cabinet, lift the panel and locate the lid switch connection at the left. Unplug the lid switch and you can use an insulated jumper wire betwen the two gray wires in the connetor that goes to the controls (not the part that goes to the cabinet) Turn the washer on and see if it starts.

Also make sure the screws that hold the hinge to the lid are tight. If they are very lose, the lid switch will not activate.

Whirlpool model # LLR6144BQ1 water fills but will not go to wash cycle.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.
This is usually caused by a failed lid switch that is item 9 this link:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=256996

First off put the washer in the spin cycle. With the lid closed see if the washer will spin. No spin also = bad lid switch. If the washer spins but will not agitate then the problem is most likely the water level pressure switch or associated air tubing. (any air leaks and it will not stop filling)
Water level switch is item 12 here:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=256996&diagram_id=28209075#d28209075
We test these with NO WATER in the machine and after connecting an external hose with the lid closed with power on by orally passing air into the small air hose we connected. It will click and the washer must agitate. If it clicks and does not agitate... again it points to the lid switch. Disconnecting this water level switch hose with ater in the maching and then re-connecting the hose WILL result in the machine overflowing. Tub MUST be empty.

You check the lid switch as you just open or close the lid. You should hear an audible CLICK as the lid is barely off of its closed position and again as the lid is almost closed. NO CLICK = bad door switch.

These are the 2 most common reasons that will correct the symptom your experiencing more than 90 percent of the time. There is a remote possibility that there is a problem with the motor / motor clutch. Motor clutch problems are noted by odd noises when motor is running and it will not spin or agitate. If the motor will spin the machine but will not agitate the machine it can be a motor winding.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

Won't agitate or spin-belt appears to be intact and doesn't look like it's slipped. what now?

Could be a number of problems, is the machine filling up with water to the different levels? could be the water level switch, but this does not affect spinning (ensure the lid is closed prior to trying the spin cycle). If no motions at all problem could be the motor or motor brushes or if machine is not filling up with water could be a power supply problem.
If you are in UK I have a spare motor. contact me

WASHER FILL, NO PROBLEMS AGITATING, WHEN TIME

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

The Kenmore / Whirlpool top load uses a reversing motor to initiate the pump for draining and the transmission to spin.

If you cannot hear the motor trying to turn the pump, (but the washer will agitate) the problem points to the Timer, or the Lid Switch.

Try to bypass the Lid Switch by removing the Console and jumping the two outermost pins on the switch.

This is the Whirlpool PDF on installation and maintenance of direct drive washers. See the section on how to bypass the lid switch and on the transmission.

Following is an illustrated description of how to remove the cabinet on Kenmore / Whirlpool top load direct drive washers.

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=137

Since it won't drain, the problem points to the lid switch. You already have the cabinet off so replacing the switch isn't too difficult.
The Sears site has the Sears (and probably Whirlpool) part number.

if you hear the motor running while it is supposed to be agitating or spinning then it is most likely the direct drive coupling between the motor and transmission.43f18ab.jpg9bd1c44.jpg if you already checked this and think it is a different problem then let me know, i will help you figure it out.  Mike

Will not drain or spin

The symptoms you are describing are usually caused by a bad lid switch. The washer will fill, agitate, but when it starts to go to the rinse cycle, the washer stops and will not advance any further. The lid switch is located on the right hand side of the wash tub opening on most top loader machines. Check to see if it has come loose. There are two screws holding it in place. Additionally, there should be a small plunger on the lid that pushes down on the switch to activate it when the lid is closed. Make sure this plunger is intact. If your washer does not have a lid switch mounted on the right hand side of the lid, it will be located on the left hand side in the rear under the console. A simple test is to open and close the lid and listen for a "clicking" noise. If you can't hear the contacts closing, your switch is probably bad. In the case of the rear mounted lid switch, there is an arm on the lid that activates the contacts. Sometimes the arm becomes bent and will not close the switch contacts. Generally, the repair is simple and a lid switch usually runs about $35. If you post back with your model number I can get an exact part number for you and give you step-by-step instructions on how to replace it. Let me know. I hope this helps you.
