Keep in mind that the spark plug orientation could vary and locations can be placed anywhere on the distributor as long as #1 cylinder is at top dead center and the distributor is aligned facing number 1 plug.
The temperature sending unit should be located on the drivers side cylinder head between the number one and the number three spark plugs, that is if it is the original engine.
Check that you have not got any vacum leaks between inlet manifold and cylinder head.
Check your spark plugs and HT leads are in good condition and not worn, reset gaps. If worn replace them.
Worse scenario is the head gasket make be leaking water into a cylinder. Get a cylinder leakage test done to verify any manifold air leaks or faulty sealing head gaskets. Good luck, let me know how you get on.
I have a 91 suburban and it wont hold idle. I am waiting for and egr valve. if that fixes it i will let you know. I was told that they can have an internal vacuum leak therefore being difficult to detect.
