If this problem only happens with one friend, does that friend have their microphone muted?
If it happens for everyone you try to chat with, try deleting your iChat preferences file. It is located in your home directory/library/preferences folder. It is called com.apple.iCal.plist. There are a few other files with similar names, and you could delete them all. You would then have to reset up iChat with any usernames and passwords you may have had before (like AIM)
If that still does not work, try resetting your pram

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
  5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  6. Release the keys.

Hi,
a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US.
click here to Talk to a Technician (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Goodluck!

SOURCE: I cant hear my buddies when using ichat but they

This is easy..
Your buddies need to raise their microphone volume, which may be muted. System preferences, sound, look for the microphone slider and raise it to full.
Quicktime doesn't like AVI's by default, and even when it does work, it usually won't play the sound. There are two solutions.
1. download 'flip4mac' which is a quicktime plugin for playing AVIs (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx)
2. Download VLC, which plays everything, and has the excellent feature of raising the volume to 300% (great for crappy laptop speakers). http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html

How do I unmute during ichat on my mac book pro

In iChat 4 and upwards the Video and Audio streams are on the same port.
This would make it virtually impossible to block one without blocking the other.
Just to double check
System Preferences > Sound > Input
Ideally this should have the Mic chosen and the volume set to make the blue bar get to at least 1/2 way (3/4s is better). It should not move so far that it bangs into the right hand end.
This will cause the OS software to "Clip" the Audio to prevent feedback - which means no input is made and you will hear nothing.
Next.
iChat > Preferences > Video section.
If there are two Inputs showing in System Preferences he will have a drop down
It should list the same device.
The green bar below the Video pic should also move (Although less than the blue bar did/does)
Headsets
If he is now using a Headset.
Change the iChat Option to anything but the headset mic.
Do the same in System Preferences > Sound > Input.
Now set System Preferences > Sound > Input "First"
And iChat > Microphone Drop Down "Last"
He may need to do this for an Output choice if it appears in iChat and in the System Preferences > Sound > Output.
He needs to be concerned with with getting Sound In to iChat as that is what you hear.
It is easy to think that it is Output as it goes over the internet to the Buddy.
More.
The Video Menu of iChat
In here the Microphone Enabled should be ticked
Selecting this items toggles the tick on or Off (And the Mic On or Off)
I would also check the View Menu
In here make sure the Show Audio Status is ticked.
This will show Audio icons next to the Buddies (Particularly if you deselect Show Video Status)
Show Video should allow Audio but it will not hurt to check.
In fact I would toggle the Microphone Enabled and both Show Statuses to make the App write the info to the .plist
Then try an Audio Only chat
You can do this from the Buddies menu (Or right clicking a Buddy) or by having Show Video Status Off.
Yet more.
I would also open the Connection Doctor from the Video menu at both ends during a chat
This will report the stats.
If his Bitrate is not stable then his audio may be effected.
iChat will try to cope with changes by Buffering the Video which means dropping frames which then means the audio is dropped as it will not be in sync.
You can try Limiting his Bandwidth in the Video Section of the Preferences to 500kbps
This will smooth out large variances when using Extremely fast services that vary.
500kbps is more than enough for a 4 way Video chat as Host but is a useful tool in iChat 5
If his Framerate also varies it will be a sure sign that his Internet speed is varying.
It may pay for you to drop your to 500kbps as well as hs end may be struggling to deal with high data loads from your end.
As a Last resort try both end at 200kbps (Anything below this will not Video)
Change one end at a time and keep an eye on the Connection Doctor to see when the end that has changed has settled. The Buffering will smooth out the change.

IChat: No response with Audio/Video after modem/router changes

The local Apple Genius Bench was nice to reload iChat and OS for us. But he could not get iChat going for me and my relative. It looks like iChat will have trouble between DSL and Cable but DSL to DSL and Cable to Cable each case is fine. Anyway, after connecting to Apple iChat Test Site
Appleu3test04, my MacBook started to work better with iChat as my relative is able to see and hear us although on my end the incoming picture is not too clear. Then finally Upgrade of New OS seems to make the picture sharper. Thinking back, the original problem came from Modem upgrade to higher speed but I did not use the new DSL telephone filters. Please post this up to help other frustrated iChat users. Anyway, we still like Apple! By Jim on 05/30/2009

How to use the video chat in macbook??

just checking, but did you use ichat? ichat is the chat client for AIM on a mac. they show icons next to the people that you can audio or video chat with. it shows a video camera next to those who you can mutually video chat with. if you click the icon, it makes a video chat. if you were looking to use a service other than AIM, i suggest meebo.com. you just hit the webcam icon once chatting with someone and you are ready to go (assuming you have the isight webcam in your macbook).
hope this helps ;-)

Normal 0 After you install Skype and have it operational with your ID. Go to "TOOLS", click on "OPTIONS," Then go to "Audio Settings" and click on it. Make sure both the Microphone and Speaker's are correctly chosen. Then "make a free test call." Wait till the voice tells you to record. Then when finished talking wait for the test persons voice to insure your audio transmission is working. Then go back to options and test your video settings. URGENT MY ICHAT VIDEO CHAT IS NOT WORKING

If you are using VMware Fusion at the same time that you get the problem then it is Fusion. Check by shutting down Fusion then trying the iChat. If it works fine then it's definitely Fusion that is interrupting it.

With internet sharing off as you describe the next thing is to make sure that it is also not sharing the iSight itself. When fusion is running but not windows itself, check the configuration of your windows bootable in Fusion. (You'll have to excuss me a bit as I havn't used Fusion for a bit since switching over to Parallels) Check to see if the iSight is listed among the USB devices.

If it's not there load up windows and check which devices are connected there from the main Fusion Menu or the little icons on the Fusion Status bar. If it's not, double check by right clicking on MyComputer and choosing properties then go to Device Manager and then looking in there for any USB camera devices. If it is, right click and disable it.

See if any of that helps.

All the best
