Follow the link provided by Jason B in Solution two.... just did it at my desk in under a minute. It really works. Seems tricky but really not, I did it with nothing but a push pin sitting at my desk. Once I removed thr small black dot I cleaned the mic and tested... MUCH louder, although maybe a bit more "tinny" sounding than when I first bought it.
Dissassembled real quick and slipped a tiny scrap of unltra plus Puffs Plus tissue over the Mic where the black foam dot was. Quality got much better again.

some phones have a natural problem with this due to the electronics in the handset others may have a button that says channel or scan this will allow the handset to look for a stronger channel between it and the base most of the time that will cure the problem. if not hang up and try your call again it will allow the base to do the same thing and may clear the problem up. nether helps you may have a defective phone.

Have you tried using your X1 with a PC (green Line Out and pink Microphone jacks)? If the mic works on the PC, then you know the chat/controller cable should be replaced.

The music to sing along with apparently MUST come from a disk played on the unit. It appears that the external audio jacks are just to use the unit as either a boombox or to drive a larger sound system. You will have to convert your IPOD music into a Karaoke compatible CD to be able to sing along with it... They probably detect MIC input and mute any incoming signals from the RCA jack inputs,
