It all depends on if it's bios or OS if it's bios you can reset the bios by opening the desktop panel and clear the cmos chip by taking the pin out and restart the system for about 10 seconds then turn off system and put back pin and go into bios set to defaults and that should clear it.But if it's OS you would have to buy a program that reset OS passwords like (reset password).

If you can't change the setting in the bios setup that means you have a bios supervisor password set. If you don't know the supervisor password you can reset the supervisor with Acer Bios Master Password from http://www.unlockbiosrecovery.com/Unlock_Acer_Bios.php for only $20

If you can login in under your User password and has administrator password, then you can change the Administrator/supervisor password. Go to Control Panel - User Accounts then select the User account and change the password for this User.

IBM thinkpad T41 -> get

Hi,

The IBM Thinkpad has a very strong security system.

If you are seeing a lock symbol when booting then somebody has set the supervisor password. If you can't remember it or guess it (try "password", "admin", "pass", etc) then you need to find the person that set the supervisor password.

Once the supervisor password is set the T41 is very well protected and it can't be reset by removing the laptop battery or CMOS battery.

There is a way to read the password from the protection chip but this is very complicated and requires taking the laptop apart and building your own chip reader.

The instructions for doing this are are:

Hope this helps,

Chris

When i turn on my emp thinkpad it's all black and on the top it says password but i dont know it.

Per Lenovo Support (they purchased IBM thinkpad a couple years ago)
ote: Do Not Forget Your Supervisor Password! If you forget your Supervisor password, there is no way to reset your password to enter the BIOS configuration. Setting a supervisor password automatically sets the hard drive password. If you do not remember your supervisor password you must have the system serviced to have the system board and hard drive replaced. Proof of purchase is required, and this repair is not covered under the warranty.

Supervisor password

A Supervisor password protects the system information stored in the BIOS. The user must enter the Supervisor password in order to get access to the ThinkPad BIOS Setup Utility in order to change the system configuration. If the Supervisor password is forgotten there is no way to reset it to enter the BIOS configuration. Setting a Supervisor password automatically sets the master Hard drive password. The following is the icon that comes up in the upper left corner if a Supervisor password is set:
A forgotten Supervisor password will prevent access to the ThinkPad BIOS setup utility. To regain access, the system will need to be serviced to have the system board and hard drive replaced. Proof of purchase is required, and this repair is not covered under the warranty.

Bios password reset

from the Toshiba support site

The BIOS and Supervisor passwords cannot be removed or changed unless you know the existing password(s). If you forget your BIOS or Supervisor password, you will have to have the password removed by a Toshiba Authorized Service Provider. Although the prompts for these two passwords have the same appearance, the passwords are set and removed differently. If both are set, the Supervisor password takes precedence.

I assume that the notebook will have a BIOS battery similar to a standard PC. If you are happy to disassembe it you may be able to reset the BIOS by removing the battery and/or locating the bios reset jumper

Another alternative is to If this doesn't work or you dont want to disassemble the PC, you can try to build the Toshiba Parallell loopback.

A lot of Toshiba computers remove the password when you boot it up with the loopback connected

It can be made out of a 25pin male connectors (db25). Connect these pins: 1-5-10, 2-11, 3-17, 4-12, 6-16, 7-13, 8-14, 9-15, 18-25
