Check plug wire first-- replace if bad. See if contact in plug cap is corroded. Use some Dielectric Contact Grease in the spark plug cap-- this will ensure good contact.

Also check kill wires that travel to tiller. They often get broken internally or get shorted out as they enter the housing engine.

These are the most obvious and easiest to fix. Your intermittent probem sounds like one of these issues (I used to have this same engine and had both problems)

How do I set the timing on my 1967 Mercury outboard motor? It starts but seems to sound like it has a slight miss, and when you idle down to put it in gear, it dies.

I have seen it done. The shell is removed to the points. A probe is inserted in the cylinder hole for #1. When the piston is clocked to TDC the breaker plate is locked when the piston touchs the probe and provides continuity. Some engines may require a few timing degrees either BTC or ATC. Throw in new points to eliminate the low end miss as weak spark at low rpm may not flow good on worn points.

Relist on outboard motor or boat section of Fixya.

How to remove the prop shaft and drive shaft from a 1986 9.8 Mercury Outboard motor.

You have to remove the gear case from the motor and bench disassemble it. Buy a manual. Either mercury or generic.

I need the type and info on my Mercury Classic 50 outboard motor

serial number is what you need and try looking on the starter or the switch box ( square box with lots of wires on as they have dates on also ) take pictures of engine in and outside as if decals are original it will date it as well ! take to or email your nearest dealer with all info and they date your engine no problem !

1976 115 hp mercury outboard motor manual

fuel goes in at connector then to fuel pump then to carbs ! remove connector off fuel line and prime fuel up so you know you got fuel ! then reconnect to engine and prime up again till you see filter filling and bulb should harden , then remove a drain screw from carb bowl and prime again and see if fuel comes out of all carb drains ! if yes then start engine with or in water with kill lanyard on if ok then good ! not then check sparks on all plugs putting them against the head for earth and crank to check ! if ok then i would remove carbs and clean the jets etc ! compressions 100psi or more on all cylinders ! less means recon pistons etc !

Mercury outboard over charging

Your motor is fine. It needs to put out more than 12 volts or the battery will not charge. Most alternators put out between 13 - 17 volts, so this is well within the range.
