Question about HP Compaq ProLiant DL380 G4 Server

Hard disk space

Our IT said that our Compaq Proliant DL380 can only handle a maximum of 28G Hard Drive because of BIOS age.  We only have about 100mg of free space left on a Novel platform.  Is there an updated BIOS Flash that will enable us to install a larger Hard Drive?  If so, please paste the link.

Re: Hard disk space

Check on the HP website for BIOS updates and Firmware updates for your raid controller. This sounds very odd that there is a 28GB limitation on drive size? What size drives are in there now? They usually step up in size like 9GB, 18GB, 36GB, 72GB, etc.... Your IT guy maybe misinformed.

I have HP PROLIANT DL 380 (G4). I removed hard disk. Its start and few seconds restart again. its happening continuously. Any solution.

need to provide moreinfo.
is the server (prolaint DL380) constantly rebooting within BIOS mode or has it got to the stage of running windows.
The other item not mentioned here, is, IF the raid controller has failed, you will not see any disks initializing and would cause the system to continually reboot.
If it is an internal raid controller, it is part of the motherboard, you will need to contact HP to have it replaced.

If an pci related array controller .. i.e. separate to the motherboard, this will need to be replaced to see the HDD's.
Either way sounds like a hardware issue. Best to liaise directly with vendor to have the faulty components replaced.

How do i boot a compaq proliant dl380 with a usb drive set up for booting?

Make sure you have turned on the USB Boot in the BIOS of the os. Once this is done, select the order you would like for the server to locate boot files. (Hard Drive, USB, CD/DVD, etc.) Once complete, insert the USB and reboot the server.

Good Luck

I am using HP DL380 G4 SERVER,cd rom drive is not working , thats why i connected external usb cd rom drive ,and i tried to bood 2003 server os , but failed, please help me................... if any...

Make sure the BIOS is fully updated from the HP website. Most DL3-series servers supported booting from an external USB cd, try F10 or F12 at boot in order to bring up a boot menu.

HP DL380 G4 could not boot up. Nothing display as well. What's wrong with that?

make sure there is no disk in cd rom drive if there remove it and also check the amber led in front panel which is indicating the problem still if you are not able then open it and check the ram. And the power connector in motherboard and also the cmos battery or reset the bios.

Need bootable floppy program for my compaq proliant DL380

If i remember correctly, The Compaq ProLiant doesn't have a boot time BIOS configuration system. You can't hit F2 or F10 or DEL on boot to get to the BIOS. Instead, you have to use DOS/Windows programs for BIOS configuration. You will need the smartstart (anywhere from 350MB to 600MB download) and firmware maintenance CDs (somewhere around 350MB) for your model of Proliant. You can download it from HP. Just start at, select your location, then search on your model.
