Question about Kenwood VR-409 Receiver
I have a Kenwood VR 409 receiver I recently acquired from a neighbor. It silences itself about either 30 seconds or up to 3 minutes after it is turned on. I disconnected all speaker wires from the speaker jacks on the receiver to rule out any shorts, but problem remains. The previous owner denies having a problem with it.
I looked in side and can see four large capacitors that have the plastic wrapping (the black sleeves that has the printed values on it etc.) shrunk off the top and somewhat down the sides of the capacitors--I mention this because a friend once told me that when this happens, it means the capacitors need to be replaced. Is this true and could it be the culprit?
Good thing that you noticed the capacitors, and your friend is correct. the capacitors at that state needs to be replaced because it has met its end of life. worst is that corrosion will start running down the circuit board possibly destroying more components.
have the caps replaced, this will not cost more than 5$ each. and if you have a soldering set or someone you know does, this is just a 5-minute do-it-yourself soldering.
hope this helps.
