10 reasons for skipped stitches

Machine. Skips stitches and the thread breaks in the top tension.

First, install a brand new needle. Confirm that you are using the correct needle for the thread and fabric being stitched, ie the needle eye could be too small for the thread, the fabric is coarse or sticky causing the thread to wear/fray causing breakage, the needle is blunt or bent, a ball point needle is being used on woven fabric or vice versa...
All About Needles

Second, remove the thread from the machine. Always RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning--make sure the correct thread pathway is followed (consult the manual).

Verify that the tension is not set too tight. The tension is correct when both upper and bobbin threads meet in the middle of the fabric without any puckering of the fabric.

Use good quality thread--avoid old or bargain bin variety. And, use the same thread for the upper and bobbin. Some thread brands may work better than others in your machine. You may need to experiment to find ones that work best.

There is also the possibility that there is a nick or burr somewhere that is catching the thread. You can wrap your index finger with old hosiery (or similar fine fabric) and rub around the thread path, in the bobbin/hook area, needle plate, etc. A small burr can be smoothed with a fine emery board. A big burr may require replacement of the part or service by a technician.

I have a futura ce 150 and my bobbin thread won't catch

Are you able to bring the bobbin thread to the top of the needle plate, but it's skipping stitches, or you can't "catch" the bobbin thread to start sewing at all.

If you can't "catch" it at all, your machine's hook is no longer synchronizing, and you will need to have it retimed by a technician. The good news is, timing is not something that is unique per manufacturer, which means ANY sewing machine technician should be able to do it.

Every 4 or 5 stitches the bobbin thread fails to catch the top thread resulting in skipped stitches

double check needle position and needle type. It will also do this on stretchy material, do to material catching on the thread

Thread breaks and skips stitches

Open the needle plate, remove the bobbin and bobbin case.....refer to your manual.

Clean away lint and threads.

Thread with the presser foot up.

If this continues, take the machine and samples of the mis-stitching in for service. It could be the timing needs to be adjusted by a professional.

Elna SU missing stiches and breaking thread

it sounds like the needle hook timing is out. You need to get the needle in the lowest position and measure the gap from the needle to the hook point on the bobbin shuttle. It should be 1/4". You will need to remove the foot and foot plate to be able to see. I use a 1/4" drill bit as a gauge. If you need to adjust it, you will need to remove the free arm cover to the right of the foot and loosen the 2 allen head screws that hold the drive gear. Adjust the gap, tighten the screws and retry. Usually if the needle catches the thread to early, it will make a bad stitch and the upper thread will break. If it catches to late, it will make thread loops and the machine will skip stitches. Good luck, these are a good machine and worth fixing. Phil
