Question about Kitchen Ranges

Kenmore Wall Mounted Oven (JRP20 model)suddenly lost power. One night while using the unit we smelled a faint scent of "hot plastic". The next night while my wife was preheating it, she heard a "sizzling" sound and the unit suddenly lost power (no heat and no electronic display or lights). I've pulled it out and found no signs of electrical short (no melted or burned connections or wiring jackets). Is there a fuse that may have blown? Some other cause? (The breaker never tripped - however, I did turn it off after the unit stopped working).

Thanks for your reply. This is a conventional oven - not a microwave. Does your analysis about the high-voltage capacitor still apply? Thanks again.

Thanks for the advice. Going to check wiring again... no sign of broken or burned wires on the unit itself.

Hi

If your range/oven doesn't seem to work at all, check these:

Fuse/circuit breaker --Check to see if power is getting to the range/oven. Does anything turn on--even a light? If not, check for a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker.

Range/oven wiring --There may be a broken or burned wire at the back of the range/oven. The burning wires may have caused that smell. If you repair any of the wires, use only proper appliance-grade wire and wire connectors.

However the sizzling sound came from the heating element which has burnt . You'll need a multimeter to check for the resistance of the coil/element. The resistance would be around 1.6 to 1.8 Kohms.

Also see this diagram for more details---

If there is no continuity in the element then you'll need to replace the element. You can buy a new element for you oven from this link---

behind the control panel remove the grill and the screw at the top center of the control board. give it a bit of a lift and pull out you can then access the fuse if I remember correctly it should be to the left in there somewhere

High-voltage capacitor shorted. Replaced it and microwave works fine.
Its located behind the fan underneath the high-voltage transformer.
Remove the vent fan hood
Remove the display control panel by removing the screw
Take pictures of all the connections behind the control panel.
Unhook all connections
Remove the connections to fan
Remove the fan
Remove the screws and connections for interlocking switches.
Make sure the high voltage capacitor is discharged!
Remove the high voltage capacitor and replace
Retrace the steps and put everything back.
Microwave works great now.
please do rate the solution.thank you for using fixya.keep updated.thanks.

sounds like the insulation on the cord has been worn through and is shorting out. turn off the breaker pull out the oven and look where the cord goes into the oven and look for black burn marks.

Runs hot air after awhile blow cool air

Model # tells me it is a convection oven. You can't dry clothes in a convection oven. they end up smelling like last nights dinner.

Please check the model #. there may be relay that controls the power to the heating element. this relay could be not functioning correctly, or it could be in the timer. maybe the thermostat that monitors the interior temperature is gone. It could be sticking closed. tough to say with the model number.

My Kenmore washing machine had a faint burning smell.

i would let it sit for an hour. more than likley what happened was the motor overheated a little because it was trying to spin in an off balance situation. give it a break for a while the next load that you do keep an eye on it and see if you smell anything if you do then you have a problem. But 99% it is ok.

Strange smell

Have you cleaned the evap coil? Most often smells come from the evap coil. A bleach type product used for cleaning will solve this problem. Thanks
