Mower will not stop when clutch is depressed

I have a 20 HP Yard Machine riding mower and when you push down the clutch/brake the mower will slow down, but does not stop. One time when I was mowing the drive belt broke and since then the clutch/brake has not worked properly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you replaced the belt you either got a shorter belt or you have rerouted the belt wrong. You might try and get an original; belt and replace the one on the tractor. Good Luck-David

If you have a tension pulley on your deck and it is seized up it may be causing your belt to be to tight and the pulleys not floating back and forth with the spring like it should,I had a john deere do that.

How to start a Craftsman 20 hp riding mower?

Your question is mighty broad, but I would start at the battery, making sure you have a fully charged battery. Sit in the seat and push the brake pedal down. Make sure the blade engagement clutch is off or the lever to move the deck up and down is in the up position. Unless a safety switch is defective, the mower should start. If you just hear a click, you have a dead battery or loose wire. Until you get more specific, this is the best I can do.

My lawn mower will start easily and continue running as long as the clutch brake is depressed but when I lift the clutch or try to engage the blades while the clutch is depressed the mower will stall.

This is a shot in the dark. I think you have a failed "operator presence safety switch". Rule this out by finding the switch and jumping it.

Your mower should run with no one in the seat IF THE PARKING BRAKE IS SET.

If the brake is released and no one is on it, it should shut off.

If you are on it and the brake is released you should be able to engage the blades (probably an electric clutch)

Purpose of this interlock is the shut the machine OFF should you fall off or jump off the machine. Do not disable this valuable safety feature.

Let me know what you find.

Craftsman 14 hp 42'' cut mower brake problems

Well the adjustment is in the rear of the tractor above the axle, their should be 1 9/16 clearance when the parking break is depressed, if it's not here than adjust it until it is making sure to tighten down the locknut when completed. Otherwise just replace your pads via craftsman's website. They provide breakdowns for all their units via the model/serial number of your tool.

Put on a new clutch safety switch today, same problem, mower starts fine then when I dis-engage clutch it stops running, runs fine as long as I hold the clutch/brake down! any suggestions

check the seat saftey sensor,,,sounds like its running because it thinks its brake is set.if your out of the seat it quits unless the brake is set.it will be under the seat.let us know either way we can figure it out..

Riding mower will barely move

Sounds like it time for a tuneup. Air filter changed, Spark plugs replace and oil changed, plus sharpen the blades while you are at it.

Clutch vibration and jerking at slow speeds.

Check the drive belt. It probably has chunks missing or at least has flat spots (narrow spots) that cause the belt to jump every time it goes around a pulley. That will set up a heck of a vibration. Also check the pulleys for free movement. The drive belt is above the blade drive belt....
